Refinish Hardwood Floors Darker: Steps To Refinish

The users can make the hardwood floor surface darker by adding a coat of varnish to the floor surface. There are many products that can be used to provide darker color to the floor like different types of polyurethane, varnish, and tinted topcoat.

Steps To Refinish The Hardwood Floors Darker

The steps are mentioned below to refinish the hardwood floors darker:
  1. Sand The Floors: The first step is to sand the hardwood floor surface with the help of sanding machine. The sanding is performed three times so that the floor becomes smooth and accepts the stain properly. The surface of the hardwood floor looks like a new raw hardwood.
  2. Add A Stain: Next step is to choose a darker stain and then test on a piece. It is important to test the stain on a small portion of the wood floor as the wood can accept the stain differently. Applying the stain for testing does not damage the hardwood floor. When the wood accepts the stain according to the user's specifications then apply the stain on the hardwood floor.
  3. Add Polyurethane: Last step is to apply three coats of oil-based polyurethane on the hardwood floor. Each coat of polyurethane takes about 24 hours to dry. After applying the second coat the users need to buff the floor surface which makes the floor surface smoother and thus the polyurethane absorbs better.
