Painting Metal Furniture: Proper Procedure To Paint Metal Furniture

Proper Procedure To Paint Metal Furniture

Painting metal furniture works best with spray paint due to the fact that it can adhere strongly to the metal and gives a smooth finish. The procedure for painting metal furniture is as follows:

Cleaning The Metal

  1. Well-ventilated Area: It's a good idea to work in an open, outdoor area, such as the driveway or lawn, while cleaning and applying the paint so there will be no buildup of fumes. Otherwise, the user can also work in a room with multiple windows that can be kept open to ventilate the space. Place a drop cloth down on the floor so the paint doesn't drip or will stain anything.
  2. Scrub The Metal Furniture: Apply a firm amount of pressure to scrub the chair with the help of a brush. The user needs to be sure to work in all of the tight corners or decoration on the furniture so the rust, as well as paint flakes, will come off. Continue scrubbing across the surface of the metal furniture until it feels smooth and the user has removed as much rust and paint as they can. The user can buy the wire brushes from any local hardware store.
  3. Wash The Metal Furniture: The TSP (tri-sodium phosphate) is a heavy-duty cleaner which the user can purchase from hardware stores. While handling TSP it is important to wear gloves, a face mask, as well as safety glasses as it could cause irritation. Mix 1/4 cup of TSP cleaner with 2 gallons of water and stir it well together thoroughly. Now dip the bristles of a scrub brush in the solution and then use it to scour down the surface of the metal furniture, this will remove any dirt or residual paint.
  4. Wipe Down The Furniture: Wet a cleaning rag in warm or in cold water as well, and then rub the entire surface of the furniture to remove any cleaner. Focus on any tight corners or small crannies because the cleaner can get stuck there. Keep the furniture in a well-ventilated area or outside so that it will dry completely before applying any paint, if it is not completely dry it could rust after the paint's been applied.

Spray-Paint

  1. Metal Primer: Wear a face mask so the user don't inhale any of the paint fumes. Purchase a spray can of metal primer to use metal furniture since it adheres strongly to the surface. Hold down the can of primer about 6 inches from the surface and apply it. Work in back and forth strokes, the best way is to use short bursts of the primer so the user doesn't overspray it.
  2. Let Primer To Dry: Leave the furniture in a well-ventilated area or outdoors while the first coat of primer fully dries. Then, spray another coat of primer onto the furniture and let it dry completely. Apply the second coat of primer in the opposite direction of the first coat to get even coverage.
  3. Spray Paint: Shake the can of spray paint very well before applying it, the shaking will help it to come out smoothly. Again hold the can about 6 inches from the surface and spray it. Apply in a straight back and forth motion. If the user is painting metal outdoor furniture, then make sure to use a spray paint that is meant for exterior use.
  4. Let The Paint Dry: The spray paint dries very quickly so it's possible to apply multiple coats in a short amount of time. Once the first coat is dry completely, then apply a second coat of paint in the opposite direction.
  5. Spray A Layer Of Clear Coat: Spray clear coat and shake it so it's well mixed before applying it. Hold down the can at least 6 inches away from the surface and spray it. Let the clearcoat to dry for at least 1 day before using the furniture.
