Painting Melamine Kitchen Cabinets: 2 Easy Parts To Paint

2 Easy Parts To Paint Your Melamine Kitchen Cabinets

Melamine is a fabricated resin made by mixing formaldehyde & melamine and it is a communal binder for furniture or house paint. If you want to paint your melamine kitchen cabinets then you need to follow all the 2 mentioned parts to finish this work. Here are the 2 parts:

Part 1: Sanding And Cleaning The Surfaces

Here are the 5 easy steps for sanding & cleaning surfaces:
  • First of all, set up your area that you want to work on before you start painting your melamine kitchen cabinets. Simply, place tarpaulin, a newspaper, or a drop cloth on your floor below your project. Ventilate your working area by opening all windows, door & turning on a fan if possible.
  • Use a sander to softly roughen the surfaces of your kitchen cabinets. You need to attach 150 grit sandpaper to your sander & sand every area that you want to paint. You also need to pay special attention to the edges & any detailing.
  • Next, apply a liquid de-glosser, using a paintbrush, as a quick disjunctive to sanding. Leave it to soak into the wood for at least 15-20 minutes. Then you need to wipe it off with a cloth.
  • Now, wipe away all of the dust which comes after the sanding with the help of a tack cloth. Clean away all the loose wood, coating, and also dust particles from your melamine cabinets. Check all of the corners & joints to be sure that you haven't missed any spot.
  • Finally, clean all of the surface of your kitchen cabinets with trisodium phosphate (TSP) detergent. Always try to wear rubber gloves when using the TSP detergent to avoid irritating your skin. Simply dilute 4 ounces (110 g) of TSP detergent into 2 gallons (7.6 L) of water(warm). Grab a sponge to wipe down all surfaces of the kitchen cabinets with the solution. Then use a clean rag to rinse all of your surfaces with fresh, clean water.

Part 2: Applying Primer And Paint

Here are the steps for part 2:
  1. Firstly, apply primer by using a paintbrush over all of the corners & edges. Use a paintbrush specifically made for melamine kitchen cabinets. Work on all of the areas that you cannot easily reach with the help of a paint roller.
  2. Use a paint roller in order to apply the primer to the melamine kitchen cabinet. Roll your primer in 1 direction across each surface of the cabinets. Ensure that your roller always sounds crinkly & wet, and if it loses that sound then you need to apply more primer on your roller. Leave the primer to dry for a few hours, it make take up to 4-5 hours.
  3. Once the primer is dried completely, now you need to sand this primer on the applied area in order to remove any imperfections from the surface of your cabinets. Take sandpaper (220 grit) to smooth any drips or any other marks which are caused by the primer. Once done then wipe over the sanded surface area by using a tack cloth again.
  4. Add 2nd coat and cover the full surface of the kitchen cupboards or furniture again and then wait for the primer to dry wholly.
  5. Apply the 1st coat of melamine paint over the primed area. Use a foam roller to equally coat all surfaces with paint. Let the 1st coat dry for nearly 6-8 hours.
  6. Apply the 2nd coat of melamine paint once the 1st coat is dry entirely. Use either a paintbrush or a foam roller or again to apply melamine paint to all of the surfaces of your kitchen cabinets. Let your final coat dry for 24 hours.
  7. Finally spray paint your kitchen cabinets if you prefer a smoother finished surface. Start with inside or back any doors to cupboards, so that you can get used to spray painting there first. Then spray paint your entire cabinets & let it dry overnight.
