Easy Process To Install A Steel Door In An Existing Block Wall

A new door as well as a frame are usually needed when it comes to replacing an already existing broken door. Here, we are going to let you know the process of installing a steel door in an existing block wall. Maybe your building was broken, and the vandals destroyed the door as well as a frame in the process of entering your building. Or maybe your rear steel exit door was inadvertently backed into by a moving or loading truck. Or your steel door is very old and doesn't look the best and you want a new door. Irrespective of what the case may be, we are here to cover every aspect of the process of replacing that old door in your block wall and installing a brand new one.

Step 1: Remove Old Door

First of all, pull out your old steel door and frame by removing the door hinges and separate the door from the frame. As the original door was, in all probability, installed when the building was first constructed, therefore, the anchor types used were almost certainly masonry wire anchors or masonry tee anchors. If this is the case, then those anchors will need to be cut. Remove the floor anchor before you saw off the wire anchors in order to make sure that the door frame can be removed from the block wall.

Step 2: Installing New Anchors On Door Frame

You will have been furnished using a pipe and strap anchor, also known as punch as well as dimple anchors. Loose anchors are placed or fixed by forcing the anchor betwixt the inside of the rabbet and the return. Put anchor into position at an angle and twist as long as horizontal. Make sure holes through the anchor are aligned with the hole in the frame stop.

Step 3: Confirm Rough Opening

When it comes to an existing block wall installation, the door frame is designed to butt in opposition to the wall. The recommended dimensions of an existing opening in a masonry wall are given below:
Rough Opening Height = Frame Height + 2-1/4"
Rough Opening Width = Frame Width + 4-1/2"

Step 4: Set Door Frame & Install Wood Spreader

Position the door frame into the rough opening. Install the wood spreader into the underside of the door frame. If your door frame was welded and came with a spreader bar, then it is important to remove it and replace it with a wooden spreader. This is to make sure that the door frame is level. The spreader bar is usually not an accurate jig. Next, add another wood spreader in the center of the frame.

Step 6: Plumb Jambs, Header, Square Corners & Pre-drill For Anchors

Level the door jambs before leveling the frame head. Finally, close all corners of the door frame. Next drill 3/8" diameter holes up to 1-3/8" into the masonry wall.

Step 7: Install Anchor Bolts

Finally, use 3/8" x 4" sleeve anchor bolts in order to secure the door frame to the masonry wall.
