How To Whitewash Wicker/Outdoor/Cane Furniture?

Whitewashing Wicker Furniture refers to giving the wicker furniture a distressed or aged look. In the whitewashing process, an application of paint is thinned in water that is applied on to the wicker furniture in order to get it a distressed look. The steps involved in whitewashing wicker furniture are mentioned below:
  1. Clean The Wicker Furniture:
The first step will be to clean the wicker furniture using stiff scrub brush & soapy water in order to remove debris & dirt from the wicker. Once scrubbed, the user needs to rinse the wicker with water and then allow it to dry completely.
  2. Place The Wicker On Drop Cloth:
The next step will be to place the wicker furniture on a drop cloth in order to protect the surrounding area during the whitewashing process.
  3. Sand The Wicker:
The next step will be to sand the rough areas of the wicker furniture in order to smoothen them up using a 220 grit sandpaper. After that, the user needs to dust the wicker furniture using a tack cloth.
  4. Prepare Whitewash:
After that, the user needs to prepare a whitewash containing an equal mixture of water and white latex paint. In place of whitewash, the user also has an option of using a white pickling stain. During the process, it is necessary to ventilate the area as well.
  5. Apply Whitewash:
The next step will be to whitewash the wicker into small areas. After that, the user needs to wait for a few minutes before removing the excess whitewash from the wicker furniture using a rag. The user needs to continue with the process until the whitewash captures the whole wicker furniture.
  6. Allow The Wicker To Dry:
After that, the user needs to allow the whole wicker furniture to dry completely. Also, if the user finds some spots on the wicker furniture that have not absorbed the whitewash, the user can apply whitewash to such areas before letting the wicker to dry.
  7. Spray Polyurethane:
The last step will be to spray polyurethane on to the wicker furniture in order to give it a protective finish. First, the user can start with spraying the bottom portion by turning over the wicker and letting it dry afterward followed by spraying the top portion by turning the right side up. The user needs to spray two to three coats on to the wicker furniture making sure each coat is thoroughly dry before spraying the next coat.
