How To Whitewash A Chair: Steps & Items Needed For Whitewashing A Chair

Steps & Items Needed For Whitewashing A Chair

Whitewashing is considered as one of the best painting methods that cover wooden surfaces, including chairs, and other furniture items with a slender, shining white coat of paint. The slender paint coat permits the grain pattern of the wood to give a delightful effect. This type of painting method is particularly used on the pine furniture, however, it can also be used on numerous types of wooden chairs that you want to get painted in order to match your interior decor. To start the whitewashing method on a wooden chair, first of all, you need to gather certain items necessary to perform this task & then go through the steps carefully & achieve the desired result of your work:

Things Needed

  • Fine Grade Sandpaper
  • Microfiber Cloth
  • White Latex Paint
  • Bucket & Paint Stick
  • Paintbrush & Clean Cloth
  • Water Based Poly-Acrylic Paint

Steps

  1. First of all, start by sanding the wooden chair, from the top to the bottom, with the help of fine grade sandpaper. Cleanse the chair surface, with the help of a microfiber cloth, in order to get rid of the dust that occurred during the sanding process.
  2. Now, blend together white latex paint(2 parts) with water(1 part) in a bucket, with the help of a paint stick, to make your whitewash. Then take a paintbrush & spread the whitewash mixture thoroughly. Make sure to move in the direction of the wood grain and work in small areas, as it will dry quickly.
  3. Rub the extra whitewash with the help of a clean cloth and proceed in the direction of the wood grain. This generates stains in the color that permits the wood below to show through. This method permits the whitewash to stand out perfectly near any corners, nooks, as well as crannies on the chair where the whitewash has gathered.
  4. Now, give the chair some time to dry completely, before going for another layer of whitewash and then rub it off with the help of a clean cloth. Affix 3 to 4 whitewash coats, or as much as required to come to the desired effect. Allow the whitewashed chair at least 4 hours, or go through through the paint label for the recommended time period, for the paint to fully dry.
  5. Next, perform sanding process on all the corners as well as any raised sections on the chair as required for a more aging appearance. Rub off the sanding dust with the help of a microfiber cloth.
  6. Finally, apply a water-based poly-acrylic sealant coat to the chair with the help of a paintbrush by moving the paintbrush in equal, long brush strokes across the surface of the chair.
