How To Weave A Chair Seat: Ultimate & Easy Way Of Weaving A Chair Seat

Ultimate & Easy Way Of Weaving A Chair Seat

A woven chair seat is easily customizable and is a great way to make quality chairs just at a fraction of the cost. In order to weave a chair seat, you first need to collect certain items required for the process and then go through the step by step way mentioned below. The items needed include rope, spacers, shuttles, as well as a crochet hook, you will get all these items from any local craft store. The materials that are needed are light and easy.

Step 1: Weaving The Warp

  1. Tie The First Half: The first step is to tie the first half of the rope to one of the horizontal poles with the help of a clove hitch. The user can start to weave from any one of the four sides of the seat. Tie the knot and then slide to one corner as this will be the starting point of the warp which means the first round of the rope and that gives the weaving its shape.
  2. Lay The Spacer Across The Seat: Perpendicular to the knot lay the 1-inch spacer across the seat. This spacer will help to keep some slack in the weave while starting in the first direction. This, in turn, will make it easier to weave the chair seat on the opposite side later on. In case the first weave is too tight then remove it and start from over.
  3. Wrap The Rope: Around all over the width of the chair, wrap the rope, then back to the starting point. Take the rope and lay it down on the spacer, on the opposite seat pole, after this back under everything to the starting point. This will be first one loop.
  4. Keep The Strings From Overlapping: Start from the pole on which knot is tied, lay down the rope over the spacer, in the opposite pole, then back underneath everything to the starting point. Use the fingers to push the strings close together, then repeat the process until there are 5 total wraps.
  5. Individually Wrap: After the above step is done, then individually wrap the seat pole for creating a spacer. Wrap the rope once around the polar opposite to the starting point.
  6. Other Side: In this step run the rope to the other side and then wrap the first seat pole only once to make a second spacer. Come back to the starting point and wrap the rope around the horizontal seat pole.
  7. Slide The Strings Close Together: While sliding the strings it is important to make sure that they don't crisscross. If the user started from the left side of the seat, then slide everything to the left. There must be a total of 6 parallel strings on the seat such as string wrapped for the clove hitch, 5 strings woven across the other side and the string wrapped around on the pole for creating a spacer.
  8. Repeat: Repeat the same process of 5 horizontal wraps as well as one spacer until the whole chair is covered. This process will continue until one side of the chair is done.
  9. Run Out Of Rope: If the user runs out of the rope then tie a new clove hitch right after creating a spacer. Do not try to tie a knot in between 2 ends of the rope and keep going.
  10. Crochet Hook: With the help of a crochet hook weave any of the stray strands back into the weave. After reaching the end of the seat pole, simply snip the rope so there will be a 2 to 3" inch tail. Use the crochet hooks to tuck this strand into the warp.

Step 2: Weaving The Other Side

  1. Shuttles: Wrap down the remainder of the rope onto the shuttles. Shuttles are actually thin yarn holders that can slide into the weave easily, and will help to get the tight weave. Wrap up a small as well as a large shuttle, at the minimum.
  2. Work The Large Spacer Into Warp: Pick up the five strings and then slide the spacer underneath it. After that slide the spacer on the top of the next 5 strings, alternate to get the ladder-like pattern.
  3. Turn The Seat Upside-down: Repeat the same above step with the other spacer, lift the other five strings. In this step time, the job will be easy and this is due to the fact that another set is being held up by the other spacer.
  4. Larger Shuttle: Start with the rope on the larger shuttle, tie down the rope to a seat pole with the help of another clove hitch.
  5. Slide Under The Lifted Strings: Use the shuttle to slide underneath the lifted strings, wrap down the rope all around the width of the chair for 5 times. After the five rounds wrap up the seat poles to create spacers.
  6. Same Pattern: Follow up the same pattern as above which is five wraps and one spacer by sliding the shuttle under the lifting strings.
  7. Final Few Strands: With the help of the crochet hook manually weave the final few strands, this is due to the fact that the weave is likely tight for the shuttles. Use the scissors to remove any loose threads, strands, and the tails.
