Ways To Waterproof Wicker Furniture
Wicker Furniture is a type of furniture that is made of bamboo, reed, rattan, willow, and synthetic fibers. Due to the light-weight of wicker furniture, it is mostly used at outdoor places such as a back deck, porch, and patio. Over time, wicker furniture can become discolored or moldy due to heat, sunlight, moisture, and rain that is the only drawback of wicker. There are several ways by which the user can waterproof his wicker furniture as mentioned below;
Paint Wicker Furniture
One of the ways to waterproof wicker furniture is to paint it with outdoor paint. The steps to paint wicker furniture are as follows;
- Make Necessary Preparations: First, the user needs to get a premium quality outdoor paint in a color of his choice along with an outdoor sealer. It has been recommended by the experts to get a spray can paint & sealer as they are easy to use and give the best results possible. Besides that, the user needs to place his wicker furniture over a newspaper or a plastic sheet in order to prevent the surrounding work area from paint spills.
- Apply Paint: After that, the user needs to spray paint all over the wicker furniture. It has been recommended to create an even layer of paint over the entire wicker furniture including hard to reach areas. Alternatively, the user can apply paint over the wicker furniture by using a paintbrush. The paint should be allowed to dry as per label instructions.
- Apply Sealer: Once the paint layer dries, the user needs to spray a coat of outdoor protective sealer over the entire wicker furniture. Similar to paint, let the sealer dry as per label instructions before using the wicker furniture again.
Note: The layers of paint & sealer will protect the wicker furniture from several elements for years to come. In order to keep the wicker furniture waterproof, it has been recommended to repaint it after every three years. Besides that, it would be better to wipe down the wicker furniture with soapy water and let it dry completely before coating the furniture with paint & sealer.
Apply Tung Oil
Another way to waterproof wicker furniture is to apply a coat of Tung oil over it. Tung oil protects the wicker from several elements by keeping its natural look. The steps to apply Tung oil over wicker furniture are as follows;
- Get Tung Oil & Trigger Sprayer: First, the user needs to get a 100% Tung oil and dilute it with water as 100% Tung oil cannot be sprayed over the furniture. Alternatively, the user can get a lesser concentration of Tung oil for easy application. Besides that, the user needs to get a pressure trigger sprayer to control oil spraying.
- Prepare Furniture: After that, the user needs to place his wicker furniture over newspaper or plastic sheet in an open area. The step will prevent the user from spreading Tung oil over the workspace.
- Spray Tung Oil: The last step will be to spray the diluted tung oil over the entire wicker furniture creating an even coat. It has been recommended to let the oil air dry for several hours before putting the wicker furniture back to use.
Note: While spraying the diluted Tung oil, it is necessary to turn the wicker furniture upside down in order to coat the underside of the wicker as well. Besides that, the user can wipe down the wicker with soapy water and allow it to dry completely before spraying Tung Oil over it.
