Easy Steps To Waterproof Painted Wood

To apply waterproof paint on wood will give it protection or even some times enhance wood grain and patterns. However look of the wood always depends on the type of wood and on the surface. Here are some easy steps to waterproof your wood:
  • If you are painting the wood first time then make sure the surface is smooth and good if not then use the sandpaper(280-320 grit) in order to make the surface smooth. Sanded particles should be removed by using the cloth soaked in the paint thinner. With the humidity of the cloth all the loose sand will pick up.
  • Now check whether the surface has become smooth or not. After that apply a coat of white alkyd undercoat on the wooden piece and keep it in the ventilated area for about 3 to 4 hours.
  • If your wood was in exposure then apply aluminum wood primer. This primer will help to get rid of wooden pores and the cavities in the wood.
  • Now apply at least two more coats of alkyd enamel to finish your surface and give it a more amazing look.
  • You have to apply the first layer of finish satin semi-gloss or gloss and then keep it in a ventilated area for the drying process. Remember to sand it between the coats to get a smoother finish.
  • If you are using an oil-based primer, then make sure to use the oil-based paint but try to use water-based paints and primers as they dry fast as compared to oil-based paints and primers.
  • If you are repainting the wood, then firstly you have to assess the paint condition of the surface. If you see that the paint is peeling then you must have to scrape it or remove old paint coats. Never try to apply paint on already existing paint. If you try to do that it won't work eventually will tend to peel again.
  • If you see some stain on the paint which you applied in the wood then apply TSP to the wood. No need to remove the whole paint as you only need to focus on cleaning and sanding it.
  • Dings and deep gouges can be fixed with the help of wood putty. If possible use a flexible putty knife and fill in all the areas which need attention.
  • Clean the dust off from the surface of the wood with the help of duster. Paint or primer do not work on the dirty and untidy surfaces.
  • If you want to leave parts of the wood where you don't want to paint simply apply tape in that area. Some people are very much worried as they want to paint different colors on different pieces, in that case, the tape is the best solution. Just hide that area with tape where you want another color.
  • Primer helps the wood to give it a rich look, for that you have to apply at least one coat.
