  • Tung Oil
  • Steel Wool



Step By Step Procedure

  1. First of all, you need to perform a sanding process on the surface of the wood using fine-grit sandpaper, commencing with 180 grit and then moving towards 220 grit, unless & until the surface is even and free of imperfections, paint or other finishes. Now, clean the dust from the wood surface with the help of a vacuum cleaner and then rub it clean with a moist towel. Finally, make the wood to get dried off completely.
  2. The next step is to put on a coat of oil over the wood surface with the help of lint-free cloth, such as an old cotton T-shirt. Also, put some oil into the cloth and then start rubbing the cloth along the wood grain direction until the entire surface has been rubbed, cleaning away any puddles that may appear. Give the oil at least 30 minutes to absorb and rub it with a clean cloth.
  3. Now, after 24 hours of making the oil dry, wipe the wood surface with the help of super-fine steel wool, from the first application. After that, you need to add another layer of oil, rub it to clean after 30 minutes and make it dry for another 24 hours.
  4. The final step of the process is to sand the wood surface again but this time with the help of super-fine steel wool. Then put on a final coat of oil, rub it clean after 30 minutes and make it dry for 24 hours. If in case you feel to sand the surface again with steel wool, then go for it, however, this is not compulsory if the wood looks smooth as well as clean.

Useful Tips & Warnings

  • For extensive wood penetration, make the mixture of the tung oil and a solvent like turpentine or a citrus-based thinner having a 1:1 ratio for the first two coats. And for the last coat, use full-strength oil.
  • When rubbing the wood using steel wool, make sure to produce fine dust. If in case fine dust is not produced, then make the oil to dry for another 24 hours.
  • Remember that the tung oil takes many weeks to fully cure, so prevent the wood from water or chemicals for a few weeks after application.
