Hand & Machine Washing Pillows Using Baking Soda

It is very important to wash pillows in order to keep it look neat & clean. There are many ways of washing pillows and one among them is to use baking soda. The pillows can be washed with the baking soda either in the machine or with hand, both the methods are mentioned below:

Washing The Pillows In The Washing Machine

  1. Remove: The first step is to remove the pillow from pillowcase as well as pillow protector after the user undresses the pillow, then massage the surface as well as corners of the pillow first as this will help to fluff out and also air out the pillow.
  2. Spot Treat Any Stains: Pillows are very much prone to staining and also having some musty smell due to sweat, dirt. Before the user put the pillows in the washing machine, it is good to spot treat any stains. For this mix baking soda with the water until there will be consistency as a paste. Take clean cotton or towel and dip in the baking soda paste. Apply on the stain simply by dabbing the surface of the pillow. Leave it to stay for about 30 minutes before washing the pillows in the washer.
  3. Baking Soda Solution: Instead of washing the pillows with the standard laundry detergent, the user can also wash the pillows with baking soda, vinegar, and dishwasher detergent. Mix the 1/2 cup of vinegar with 1 cup of dishwasher detergent, 3/4 cup of baking soda and at last 3 tablespoons of laundry detergent. After the user mixes all the ingredients well, it is ready to run for the first cycle.
  4. Second Cycle: After the user has washed the pillows in the mixture, now go for the second cycle. It is important to remember to use hot water only or in a mixture using 1/2 cup of vinegar, as this will help to remove any remaining detergent that remains after the first cycle wash.
  5. Color Of The Pillow: After the second cycle is done remove the pillows from the washer, and inspect to see if the color of the pillows has improved. Otherwise, put the pillows back into the washer, this time treat the pillows with 1/4 cup of peroxide.
  6. Place The Pillows In The Dryer: After the above steps are done then it is time to dry the pillows using the clean dryer and set the dryer in air dry or low heat setting. Put a couple of tennis balls to fluff the pillows,
    the user can wrap the tennis balls in clean socks to prevent any rubbery smell. The user can dry the pillows completely, by placing the pillows outdoors on a clothesline.

Washing The Pillows By Hand

  1. Care Tags Of Pillows: The user needs to read the warnings printed on the pillows. The memory foam pillows are not water safe. Therefore, use spot treatments like baking soda paste or vinegar mist to remove any odor.
  2. Treating The Pillows: Place the pillows under the sun for a few hours, spray the pillow with the white vinegar solution. Fill out the spray bottle with white vinegar 10 drops of the favorite essential oil, mix the solution well and then spray the solution on the pillow or the user can apply the baking soda paste to the pillow’s stains.
  3. Paste: This step is applicable only to the pillows that are best for hand washing, like down pillows, wool pillows, feather pillows as well as polyester fiberfill pillows. Make a paste of dishwasher detergent, vinegar, and baking soda. Take a bowl and mix 1 cup of dishwasher detergent, 1/2 cup of vinegar, and add the 3/4 cup of baking soda. Mix them well until the paste-like consistency is formed. With the help of a toothbrush, apply the paste and brush to the surface. Leave it for near about 30 minutes.
  4. Rinse The Pillows: Fill out the basin with cool and running water. Rinse the pillows until the pillows will not feel soapy. Then dry the pillows completely before using them again.
