How To Veneer Wood: Two Parts To Apply Veneer On Wood

Two Parts To Apply Veneer On Wood

If you want to apply veneer on the wood, you can do so easily, simply go through the two parts mentioned below:

Part 1: Choose The Veneer

  1. Rotary Or Sliced Veneer: The rotary veneers are actually the veneers from which the plywood is made of. However, the rotary veneers is also available in larger sheets which means its good option for very large projects. On the other hand sliced veneer looks like the normal lumber, and has the really beautiful grain detail.
  2. Random Or Book-matched Veneer: The user can get random sets or book-matched sets of veneer. In book matched sets, the pieces were cut in the form of one next to the other, so this means the grain patterns will match up. This is very useful for creating beautiful designs. However, the unmatched sets may look more natural.
  3. Choose The Applying Method: Some of the veneer sheets already have the adhesive applied to one side. These are the easiest to secure or fix. In case of the regular veneer, the user needs to use the application method that is mentioned below in other section.
  4. Choose Glue: Its advisable to use the best glue, the user can use yellow or carpenter's glue. These glues will be best for very dry environment with little humidity. In a humid environment, these glues can cause the veneers to wander. It's best option to use a proper veneering glue.

Part 2: Applying The Veneer

  1. Cut: Cut the veneer to the needed size, make sure to leave as little overhang as possible like more than 1/4" inch overhang later this will be trimmed.
  2. Apply Contact Cement: Apply the glue on the base on which veneer is to be attached. Use a very short nap roller, to roll the glue or contact cement over the area of the base which will be covered with a single panel of the veneer. Its important to roll in one direction first and then in other. In order to guarantee full coverage of the base surface apply roller just like applying paint on a wall.
  3. Apply Glue To The Veneer: After base wood is done now apply the contact cement to the veneer, apply in the same motions also make sure to get full coverage. Its important to check that there should be no dry spots.
  4. Allow For Tack Time: In this step allow the adhesive to dry slightly usually for 5 to 10 minutes. The adhesive should feel somewhat tacky on the touch.
  5. Sheet Of Wax Paper: On the base place a sheet of wax or simply a parchment paper. This will go between the base and the veneer while aligning the veneer, which means this will help to get veneer as straight as possible without joining it to base.
  6. Align The Veneer: Now carefully align the veneer by lining up the corners of veneer to the base end. Then press it down so that the two glued surfaces touch each other, here the user needs to remove the paper.
  7. Smooth: With the help of hand, smooth out the piece of veneer, start the smoothing process from the center and then moving out towards the edges. To ensure that full contact is made the users are advised to apply firm pressure. After that take a flat tool like a putty knife and start smoothing in one direction and then in other.
  8. Trim: Atlast its time to trim out the edges with the help of utility knife and then use the high grit sandpaper (180 to 220) to sand the trimmed edges.
