How To Use Upholstery Tacks: Easy Procedure To Install & Remove Upholstery Tacks

Easy Procedure To Install & Remove Upholstery Tacks

Upholstery tacks are regarded as one of the extremely important tools, due to the reason that they grasp or hold on the upholstery material together. Upholstery tacks, as well as nails, have two main purposes: one is to secure padding or material to furniture and another one is to add decorative accents. The majority of the upholstery tacks are made for indoor use, therefore, they are not rust-resistant. If you are looking to clean them, you simply need to rub them smoothly with the help of a dry, soft cloth. Make sure not to use polishing creams, due to the fact that they could remove the finish. Upholstery tacks are sharp, so you need to take precautionary measures while dealing with them.

Items Needed

  • Brass Upholstery Tacks
  • Trim, Rubber Mallet & Glue
  • Upholstery Staples
  • Upholstery Staple Gun
  • Measuring Tape & Scissors

Installing Upholstery Tacks

  • Stretch The Covering Fabric: First of all, you need to straighten or extend the covering fabric on top of the wooden base of the furniture before placing the upholstery tack on the point from where it can be secured with the wooden frame of the furniture that you are looking to upholster.
  • Seal The Tack: After you are done with stretching the covering fabric, seal the tack with the help of a mallet or staple gun. Attach or secure the tacks using a few firm taps of mallet. When it comes to using designer tacks, then you need to be absolutely sure that tapping is not having a detrimental effect on their appearance.
  • Measure The Length Of The Seams: Now, calculate & compute the length of the seams in the furniture. Then, calculate the same length of trim. You can add a few inches more in the length of the trim, in case of any wastage.
  • Glue The Trim: Finally, fasten or join the trim to the wooden surface of the frame, using glue before stapling them securely in a desired place. When it comes to using silver or any other decorative upholstery tacks, then make sure not to glue the trim on them, as it will affect their appearance.

Removing Upholstery Tacks

When you are looking to reupholster chairs and other such furniture items, getting rid of upholstery tack nails is an important step. The tools that you will need to remove upholstery tacks include a claw hammer and a flat head screwdriver. An upholstery tack remover can also be used to get rid of the upholstery tacks.
  • Start From Loose Tacks: In order to get rid of the tacks, start from the already loose tacks. If there are no loose tacks, then always begin the removal process at the back of that furniture. Insert the screwdriver beneath the upholstery and tap it smoothly with the help of the hammer.
  • Pull Out The Screwdriver Handle: Pull out the handle of the screwdriver, by pressing its head in opposition to the furniture. While doing so, make sure that it is not having a detrimental effect on the wooden frame of the furniture.
  • Squirm The Screwdriver Back & Forth: After that, wriggle or twist the screwdriver from side to side in order to help loosen up the tacks from the frame. Then, repeat the same procedure, & remove the tacks from the frame one at a time.
  • Remove Remaining Tacks By Hand: You can also try to get rid of the remaining tacks by hand. To do that, pull the fabric away from the wooden frame before loosening up the tacks with your hand. You can use a claw hammer when it comes to hard-to-remove tacks.
