5 Easy Steps To Apply A Wash Over A Bright Paint Color To Tone It Down

Bright color will look exceptional on a piece of furniture but you have to make sure not to use too much bright color. Then apply a color wash over the bright color which allows the original shade to remain apparent, but toned down outstandingly. In order to apply a wash over a bright paint color & tone it down, collect the required items first & then go through the steps carefully:

Items Needed

  • Soft Cloth Or Duster & Newspaper
  • Painter's Tape & Paint Tray
  • Latex Paint(Different Shade From Base Color)
  • Latex Glaze & Stir Stick
  • Paintbrush & Rags

Steps

  1. First of all, you need to cleanse the painted section of the furniture with the help of a soft cloth or a duster in order to eliminate or get rid of any dust or debris particles, that may be present on the furniture piece.
  2. Secondly, you need to cover the working space with the help of a newspaper & then position the furniture product atop the newspaper. If in case you are working on the wall, instead of the furniture, then position the newspaper at the front side of the wall in order to protect the floor. If in case, you don't want to paint any particular section, then you need to cover that section with the help of a painter's tape.
  3. Now, pour latex paint into a tray & then you need to add latex glaze according to the instructions that are recommended on the glaze bucket. The more the glaze that you have added to the paint, the more the semi-transparent the top color, as a result, it will look more like the bottom and top shades blended simultaneously. If in case you have added no or little glaze, then the top color will be non-transparent standing out against the base color. Therefore, you need to select the amount that will be best suited to your finish & for that, you need to blend the paint as well as the glaze rigorously with the help of a stir stick.
  4. Next, rub the glaze mixture over a small section of the furniture piece with the help of bold X strokes, converging the strokes as you go. Buff the freshly glazed sections with a piece of cloth, moving your arm in arbitrary arcs in order to create a soft, warm look.
  5. Finally, perform step 4 again but this time with one small section at a time unless & until the entire furniture piece is glazed. After you are done, then give it some time in order to dry completely.
