How To Stop A Crack In Wood From Spreading: Two Easy Methods

Two Easy Methods Of Stopping A Crack In Wood From Spreading

Wood cracks are unattractive as well as frustrating. Whether a crack is in the beginning, during, or after the wood sign creation, it must be stopped from further expansion. In order to stop a crack from spreading in a wood, go through one of the two methods mentioned below:

Method 1: Wood Putty Or Filler Sticks

  1. Purchase A Filler Compound: The first step is to purchase a filler compound that must be of the same color as the wood. It is advisable to look for crayon-shaped wood filler sticks or the wood putty. These products, can be purchased from home improvement stores or can be ordered online, and is available in a variety of colors.
  2. Push The Filler: Into the crack push the filler with the finger. If using a filler stick, rub the stick onto the crack. Use the finger to spread it more. While using putty, a putty knife can help to spread the material over the crack.
  3. Overfill The Crack: Using the filler material overfill the crack. Continue applying filler material until it will come out right at the top of the crack. When the user will smooth and sand the filler, it will blend the crack more effectively and this is because of the overfill material.
  4. Smooth The Filler: With the help of a putty knife smooth out the filler. Before the filler material dries on the affected area, try to flatten it out as much as possible. If there is no putty knife, then run a clean rag or the finger over the crack. It is advisable that the rag must be clean to avoid introducing debris.
  5. Let The Wood Filler Dry: It is important to leave the filler to dry completely. To be on the safe side, leave the wood alone for about 8 hours or even overnight so that the filler dries completely. Finally sand down all the excess filler. Blend in the cracked area with a plane or using fine-grit sandpaper. Clean away all the filler until it is as flat as with the wood.

Method 2: Using Glue And Sawdust

  1. Get Sawdust: The sawdust is used to cover up all the white glue and blend in the crack, so it must match the wood that is going to be treated as much as possible. For the best results, get some of the sawdust from the wood by sanding it.
  2. Wood Glue: Now next step is to squeeze the wood glue into the crack. Take a bottle of the wood glue from the store. Press the nozzle against the crack and then squeeze until the glue fills up the entire crack. For the small cracks, use a syringe to ensure that the glue will reach all the way down right into the crack.
  3. Cover The Glue With Sawdust: Apply a lot of the sawdust on the glue to completely cover the area. Rub the finger over the area to make sure the glue holds up the sawdust in place. Once finished, the sawdust must hide the glue and must blend in with the rest of the wood.
  4. Let The Glue Dry Overnight: Let the glue to dry until the next day. If the crack is still visible, then reapply the glue and sawdust combination or a different filler.
  5. Sand The Crack Smooth: Finally sand with a piece of fine-grit sandpaper that is between 120 and 220 grit.
