How To Stencil Furniture: Steps And Items Needed

Steps And Items Needed To Stencil Furniture

The stenciling will easily revive an old furniture piece by simply giving it a whole new look. The best thing about stenciling is that it updates your furniture but does not require a complete & time-consuming refinishing job. The stencils are eagerly available at craft & home improvement stores. Most of the stencils are made from thin plastic that easily molds to the shape of your furniture. The trimming of large stencils so that they are smaller helps them fit all the curves of your furniture, which will ease the paint application. If you want to stencil your furniture by yourself then you just need to gather all the required items and go through all the steps carefully. Here is the list of required items and steps for this process:

Things Needed For This Process

  • Ammonia & Bucket
  • Rough Cleaning Rag
  • Fine-Grit Sandpaper
  • Painter's Tape
  • Stencil Paint
  • Paint Tray
  • Dauber Brush
  • Newspaper Sheets
  • Poly Sealer

Steps For This Process

  1. First of all, you just need to combine one part of ammonia with four of parts warm water in your water bucket and then wash your furniture surface with the help of a rough rag & the ammonia mixture because ammonia will easily remove dirt & furniture polish buildup that would otherwise avert stencil paint from adhering properly. Wipe your furniture to dry completely before painting.
  2. The next thing is to perform sanding on your stenciling area very lightly with a fine-grit sandpaper. Your fine-grit sandpaper should only softly abrade any glossy finish on your wood, will not leave behind any heavy etching.
  3. Now you need to place the stencil on the furniture at the location that the user intends and then tape the edges of your stencil down in order to hold it in the proper place as you work.
  4. Next, you need to place a small amount of your latex or acrylic stencil paint on the surface of your paint tray. Simply dip your foam dauber brush, also famously known by the name of a stencil brush, into your paint and then gently press your brush once or twice onto a sheet of newspaper in order to remove the extra paint.
  5. The next thing is to use the dauber in order to paint your stencil onto your furniture. Paint by pressing the dauber onto the wood with a monotonous movement. Avert brushing the paint on, as this may cause paint underneath the stencil & results in bleeding & uneven lines.
  6. Now you need to allow the first coat of your paint to dry wholly, which takes betwixt 10 minutes & one hour depending on your paint. You need to apply a second color, if desirable.
  7. Next you need to remove your stencil after the paint has dried. If you are going to use multiple stencils & overlaying them for a more complicated design, you must allow your paint to dry betwixt each stencil removal.
  8. You finally need to apply a coat of a water-based poly sealer over your stencil. The sealer will also provide a small amount of gloss to your wood, so you may also want to paint your entire furniture piece with the help of a sealer. Allow your applied sealer coat to dry overnight before using your furniture.
