Step By Step Process & Items Needed To Stain Or Paint Over Whitewash

Whitewash came into existence many years ago as an item to paint exterior surfaces, like Tom Sawyer's fence, according to Mark Twain. In other words, we can say that whitewash is nothing than a white paint mixed with water. If in case you want to stain or paint over the whitewash, you can do so easily but for that, you need to prepare the surface of the wood properly. Make sure to get rid of the topcoat before re-staining. Gather certain items first before going through the staining and painting over the whitewash process:

  • Paintbrush
  • Chemical Stripper
  • Sandpaper
  • Oil-Based Paint
  • Staining Sponge
  • Stain & Lacquer

Staining Over Whitewash

  1. First of all, apply a glaze of chemical stripper over the whitewashed wood. With the help of a paintbrush, you need to wrap the whitewash with a wet glaze of a stripper and let it to be there on the wood for near about 15 minutes in order to ease the lacquer or varnish.
  2. Brush the softened finish off the wood with the help of a flat stick. Make sure to brush from the inside out, allowing the stiffened finish drop off the side. Give the wood at least 1 hour to dry completely.
  3. Now, start sanding the whitewashed wood strongly, side by side to the grain pattern until the whitewash is shortened to a faint tint.
  4. Next, soak a staining sponge into an open can of the stain. Cleanse the stain onto the whitewashed wood, generously wrapping the wood with the stain. Cleanse the stain off with the help of a dry cloth as soon as possible. Wait near about 30 minutes for the stain to dry wholly.
  5. If in case you feel that the wood is not enough dark yet, then you need to apply another coat of stain. Let it be there on the wood for near about 5 minutes and then cleanse it off with the help of a dry cloth. After that, wait at least one hour for the stain to fully dry.
  6. Sprinkle one coat of aerosol lacquer onto the wood. Wait near about 15 minutes to make it fully dry. Now, sand the wood smoothly with the help of 180-grit sandpaper. Finally, sprinkle another coat of lacquer to finish.

Painting Over Whitewash

  1. Firstly, perform the sanding process on the whitewashed wood strongly, side by side to the grain pattern until the wood has a moderately rough feel to it. While sanding it is not necessary to strip the lacquer or varnish off the wood. It only requires to be uneven for the paint to stick to the wood.
  2. Secondly, paint over the whitewash with the help of a brush or you can also take the help of an aerosol can of oil-based paint. Give the paint some time to get dried off completely.
  3. Finally, sand the wood smoothly with the help of a folded piece of 220-grit sandpaper. Spread another coat of paint to finish the task.
