Easy & Unique Ways Of Staining Deck Railing

Decks are vulnerable & prone to a lot of wear & tear after using them everyday as well as from exposure to the weather. While it is attractive & appealing to stain the deck’s floor and refuse to acknowledge the railings, they need attention, too. There are some simple & unique ways in order to make railing as well as deck staining as easy as possible. These ways are alternative & time-saving ways that will help you stain deck railings quickly, however, the rails still receive the state of being protected that they need in order to last for a long period of time.

Way 1: Cleaning

In order to stain the deck railing, you first of all need to prepare the deck railings. If you do not properly prepare the deck, then the wood doesn’t soak up the protective stain, as a result of which you lose your product, & your time. The railings need a good cleaning with the help of a spray nozzle fixed to a garden hose in order to get rid of dirt and loose debris. If in case you still find stains on them, some mild detergent mixed with water should get rid of the spots. Oxygenated bleach will also help you easily get rid of the mildew stains. Mix it as per the instructions mentioned on the package. Apply the solution on the deck railings, before rinsing it well with clear water.

Way 2: Sanding

It is likely that the deck railings will not get as rough as the floor, therefore, you may only need light sanding in order to get rid of any splinters. Smoothly run your hand over each railing. If any portion of the railing system feels rough when you touch it, then it can benefit from light sanding having a sanding tool fitted with fine-grit sandpaper or attachment. Sanding should always be performed in the direction of the wood’s grain, which will make it extremely easy for the stain to soak into the smoother surface. After finishing sanding the deck railing, the wooden railings will be having a more even color as well. Rinse the sanded surfaces before letting the railings dry well & then apply the stain.

Way 3: Roller Application

A small paint roller will work exceptionally well in order to easily stain deck railings having flat surfaces. Protect the deck floor using plastic sheeting before you start. Commence the application with the top horizontal board of the deck railing. Then, paint or stain each of the upright spindles, using a roller with the grain of the wood. Clean or dry up any drips as they occur. As soon as you have applied the stain on the wooden railings, swiftly clean the railings with a stain pad. The stain pad will help push the stain deeper into the wood’s pores, which in turn will give the wood even more protection.

Way 4: Sprayer Application

If in case the deck railings have diversified surfaces, then it will not be easy to stain with the help of a roller. A garden sprayer may be the best option for staining them. Commence the application with the top of the railings and proceed your way down each spindle. If a stain pad is difficult & tricky to use in order to wipe off the excess stain, then you can use an old rag. You can still drive the stain into the wood with it as you get rid of the excess. In order to obtain or secure better control of the sprayed stain, line one side of the railing with the help of plastic sheeting, as well as the floor. Spray on the stain at the time of facing the plastic, before wiping down the spindles. Shift the sheeting to the other side of the railing and continue with the same process.
