The butcher block countertop is regarded as a popular type of wooden kitchen counter. If the user has a butcher block countertop, then they need to stain the wood in order to protect it as well as enhance its look. The steps for staining the butcher block countertop are mentioned below:
  • Sanding: The first step is to sand butcher block countertops with the help of coarse 80-grit sandpaper. This will help to remove any previous stains as well as varnishes from the butcher block, and also removes the marks or scratches on the surface. Sand in the direction of grains in the long strokes. Sand the butcher block Countertops again using 150-grit sandpaper. The fine-grit sandpaper will help to remove any marks that may be left by the coarse sandpaper and will prepare the surface to receive the stain.
  • Wood Conditioner: Apply one layer of wood conditioner with the 3 inches paintbrush in even layer across the entire surface of butcher block. Apply in the long and even strokes in the direction of the woodblocks grains. Leave the conditioner for at least 2 hours to dry.
  • Final Sanding: Sand the butcher block countertop with 220-grit sandpaper. After the conditioner has dried, sand the entire surface of the butcher block with the help of very fine sandpaper. Make sure to remove any of the splotches or discoloration that may be caused by the conditioner.
  • Choose A Stain: The user can go for water or oil-based stain in the color of the choice. The oil-based stains last longer and are more stain-resistant and will also penetrate more deeply into the surface. On the other hand, water-based stains are quicker to apply.
  • Test The Stain: Before applying the stain the user needs to apply the stain on a small section of the butcher block. Use a fresh 3 inches paintbrush for applying a single coating of stain. Coat the butcher block Countertops gently.
  • Dry: Leave the stain to dry for 2 hours and in the meantime inspect the color. If the countertops have an even and consistent color as well as stain brings out the texture of the grain, then the user is ready to stain the entire countertop.
  • Apply The Stain: In this step the user needs to apply on a layer of stain parallel in the direction of the boards. Dip the paintbrush in the can of stain, and gently tap the brush against the side of the can to remove excess stain. Apply stain to the entire surface of the butcher block. Apply in long strokes that will go all along with the direction of the wooden slats.
  • Second Coat: Leave the stain dry for 8 hours or more. Then apply the second layer of stain to the butcher block in the same way as the first coat. The second coat will darken the wood extra and will ensure that the top of the butcher block is well protected against scratches. Leave the stain to dry overnight.
  • Sealing: In order to seal the stains apply a layer of the tung oil to seal the stained butcher block. Simply dip a clean and dry cotton cloth in the tung oil or Waterlox. Then wipe the cloth to rub the sealant on the entire surface of the stained butcher block. Apply in the long and straight strokes. Apply at least 4 layers of tung oil to the surface but make sure to give each layer at least 12 hours to dry.
