How To Spray Paint Wood With Spray Gun: Steps & Items Needed

Steps & Items Needed To Spray Paint A Wood Using Spray Gun

A spray gun is considered one of the fastest tools to be used for painting wood as compared to a paintbrush. This type of tool also gives a better result without any brush marks & gives the wood an exceptional finish. If in case wood furniture has been outside for a long time, then its paint will flake off & wood becomes discolored & at that time use a spray gun to spray paint wood furniture & give it a brand new look. If you are looking to spray paint a wood using a spray gun, then you need to first collect certain items required for the task & then go through all the mentioned steps carefully:

Items Required

  • Safety Glasses & Hearing Protection
  • Filter Mask With Organic Vapor
  • Spraygun, Air Hose & Pressure Regulator
  • Paint, Solvent & Angle Grinder with Cup Brush
  • Wire Brush, Sticks & rags

Steps

  1. Safety Gear: First of all, you need to use safety gear in order to get yourself protected. Use safety glasses to protect your eyes from paint drops, dirt & wire bristles. For the safety of your lungs & brain, use mask & avoid these vital parts from being filled with solvent & dirt. Rubber gloves will protect your skin from getting damaged. All in all, keep yourself safe before starting the process.
  2. Spraygun, Airhose, And Regulator: These are the three important tools that you will need while performing the job. If the air at the place of work is wet, that time regulator will help as it has a water tarp. Some of the air compressors put a huge amount of water or oil in the air hoses & whenever it slides into your paint, it will make a confusion. To avoid this problem, put an air filter or watertrap on the gun. The regulator proceeds near the gun.
  3. Wire Brush The Metal: Now, you need to clean all the areas that look rusty, flaky as well as dirty with the help of a wire brush. The most dominant item to knock off is the item that's very easy to get removed.
  4. Power Brush: If in case you find that there are some of the heavy rust & dirt or badly flaking paint, that time power brush such as an angle grinder having a wire brush attached, will do the job faster & easier.
  5. Free Paint: There are usually two types of paint, oil and latex-based paints. Oil-based paints can be thinned with solvent whereas latex-based paints can be thinned with water. However, you don't necessarily need to thin it as you can cleanse it out of your brushes with water. Among the two paints, latex is good when it comes to painting on wood. It makes a semi-permeable water-resistant film that allows the wood to breathe a bit. Oil-based paint is extremely easy to spray due to the reason that it can be thinned more without hurting the film quality.
  6. The Real Opener: Make sure not to use the screwdriver in order to open the seal of the paint can as it makes the seal of the can leaky. Instead, you can use the real opener for the purpose of opening the paint can effectively.
  7. Thinner And Viscosity: In order to spray the paint properly, you can thin the paint with acetone, to make it run easily & make its finish look good. Why use acetone with the paint is due to the fact that it dries quickly. Make sure that you thin the paint nearly 4 centipoise viscosity in order to make it do the job better when worked with a spray gun.
  8. The Stroke: Make a move to the gun at a continuous velocity back and forth. Press the button after the gun is up to speed. Unpress the button before the end of the stroke. Intersect the strokes like shingles, wet on wet. If in case you get runs, then it is the indication towards too much paint or too much solvent in the paint. Use brighter coats & then wait & paint on another bright coat.
