How To Smooth Out Bumpy Walls: Step By Step Process Of Making Bumpy Walls Smooth Again

Step By Step Process Of Making Bumpy Walls Smooth Again

Rough, textured, or bumpy walls were mostly famous in homes that were built in the 1970s but when it comes to modern-day design, they can now appear outdated or busy. Also, if you are looking to paint or apply wallpaper over a bumpy or textured wall, it can be very difficult. However, you do not need to bring down the wall or sand it smooth in order to get a smooth finish. Skim coating is regarded as one of the best processes when it comes to covering rough walls with a thin layer of joint compound, which will smooth out the wall surface. You can then put together another texture, or wallpaper or paint over it. In order to smooth out the bumpy or textured walls, go through the below-mentioned step by step process carefully and achieve the desired result of your work:
  • Remove Any Dust From The Wall
First of all, you need to make a sponge slightly wet with warm water. Then, wipe the rough or bumpy walls with the sponge & try to get rid of any dust before allowing the walls to dry completely. Pull out the furniture from the working area or cover it with drop cloths. Cover & protect the floor also with drop cloths. Tape butcher paper over any trim in the room in order to keep the dust off it.
  • Use Joint Compound Crack Filler To Fill Any Cracks
Now, fill any cracks using joint compound crack filler. You need to protect the compound patch using a piece of drywall tape, before allowing the compound dry for at least 24 hours.
  • Mix The Joint Compound With The Mixing Paddle
Next, free or desolate a container of the joint compound into a 5-gallon bucket or wheelbarrow. Fit an electric drill having a mixing paddle. Add water to the joint compound as you combine or put it together with the mixing paddle as long as it is the consistency of the cake batter.
  • Smooth The Compound Over The Rough-textured Wall
After that, scoop the compound, usually known as mud, out of the container, with the help of an 8- to 12-inch drywall trowel. Make the compound smooth over the rough-textured wall, beginning from an upper corner and working down the wall, then across it.
  • Let The Compound Dry & Sand Any Ridges
Allow the joint compound to dry, before sanding away any ridges made by the trowel. Use a sanding pole if you are not able to reach the upper portions of the wall. Apply another coat of compound to the wall in exactly the same way as the first one if in case the wall is still slightly rough. Allow it to dry before you sand it smooth.
  • Paint A Drywall Primer Onto The Walls
Finally, paint a drywall primer onto the walls as soon as they are fully dry. This will fill in the pores as well as prepare the wall for painting or papering.
