How to Seal Painted Wood Furniture For Outdoor Use?

Sealing is required because it provides a protective layer to painted wood furniture products & decorative items that are to be used for tumble & rough work regularly. Apart from that, sealant provides a shiny look to a piece of furniture and also makes the cleaning look easy. The following steps need to be followed for sealing painted wood furniture:
  1. Select The Sealant:
    The first step will be to make a selection of sealant which the user wants to apply on to his furniture. The recommended sealants for painted wood furniture are Polyurethane, Polycrylic, Paste Wax, Decoupage Medium, and Paint & Sealer Combination.
  2. Read Sealant Instructions:
    The user needs to read specific instructions provided by the manufacturer that are actually the guidelines to apply polyurethane & polycrylic sealants.
  3. Sand The Wood Furniture:
    The third step will be to see whether the final coat of the paint is dry or not. If the paint is thoroughly dry, the user has to sand the wooden furniture using 220 to 320-grit sandpaper. Sanding makes the rough spots on to the furniture smooth but the user needs to wipe the dust off wooden furniture with a tack cloth after sanding.
  4. Dip The Brush Into Sealant:
    The next step to perform will be to select a clean brush and dip it into the sealant can and stir the sealant gently. After that, Tap off the excess sealant on the edge of the can.
  5. Paint The Sealant:
    The next step will be to paint the sealant over the surface of the wooden furniture and stroke the brush from edge to edge but make sure the strokes are in one direction and evenly coated. The process will allow the wooden furniture to create a smooth finish when completely dry. In case, the user finds bubbles or drips on some parts of the wooden furniture, he can make the spots smooth with the edge of the brush while the sealant is still wet. The sealant can dry up in two hours or wait as mentioned on the label.
  6. Light Sanding:
    Once the coat of sealant is dry, the user needs to lightly sand it using 220 to 320 grit sandpaper and clean its dust with a tack cloth.
  7. Apply Few More Coats:
    The last step of the sealing process will be to apply an additional one to three coats of sealant on the wooden furniture but make sure to lightly sand the wooden furniture after each coat except the final coat of sealant.
