How To Reupholster A Sofa With Attached Cushions: Procedure To Reupholster

Procedure To Reupholster A Sofa With Attached Cushions

It is a very challenging job to reupholster a sofa with attached cushions but with proper guidance, necessary tools, and adequate fabric the user will be able to re-upholster his cushion attached sofa by following the below-given procedure:
  1. Remove Old Fabric:
Before starting the re-upholstery process, it is necessary to remove the old fabric from the sofa. First, the user needs to flip the sofa upside down and remove all the staples from its base using a staple puller. If there are no staples visible under the sofa base, the user needs to rip the fabric seam on the bottom by using a seam ripper. Alternatively, the user can cut the fabric off with a pair of scissors if he doesn't want to keep the old fabric intact. The user needs to continue with whatever fabric removal method he chooses until all the fabric is removed from the cushion attached sofa.
  2. Determine Reupholster Fabric:
After that, the user needs to determine the fabric required for the re-upholstery process. First, the user needs to spread the removed fabric on a flat surface and calculate the yards of new fabric required for the re-upholstery as per the old fabric measurement. It has been recommended to purchase an extra yard of fabric in order to cover up the errors due to non-professional re-upholstery.
  3. Reupholster A Sofa:
The next step will be to start reupholstering the sofa. First, the user needs to cut the fabric as per the required measurements and drape it over the cushion attached sofa. After that, the user needs to tuck the fabric around the cushions tightly including the crack between the sofa back & cushion. Then, the user needs to stretch fabric tightly across the sofa cushion and staple it to the frame of the sofa by using a staple gun. The user needs to staple fabric as deep as possible into the cracks as well. Once the cushions are re-upholstered, the user needs to turn his attention towards the front, arms, and back of the sofa. The user needs to staple the fabric with the sofa frame wherever possible while stretching the fabric across the front, back and arms of the cushion attached sofa. The fabric attachment should be finished by stapling it to the base of the sofa frame and if there is any excess fabric, the user needs to cut it off with a pair of scissors.
  4. Add Fluff Wherever Required:
While tightening the fabric, if the user sees flat or sagging cushions, he needs to plump them up by adding foam padding or cotton batting underneath before stapling its surrounding areas. It has been recommended to fluff the sagged cushions as much as possible in order to cover the loss of the volume.
