How To Reupholster A Sofa: Steps To Reupholster A Sofa

What Are The Steps to Reupholster a Sofa?

Re-upholstery is a process which can only be done by the experts. A person with proper guidance and having knowledge about stitching can also reupholster by following the below-given steps:
  1. Select the Sofa:
The first step in the process will be to select the right sofa which the user wants to reupholster as most furniture is designed to be reupholstered. The user needs to take note of his preferred style option and select something that can become enjoyable once it will be reupholstered.
  2. Gather All Required Materials:
Secondly, it is necessary to gather all the required materials for reupholstering together so that the user doesn't stop while working. The materials required for the process are Upholstery Fabric, Measuring Tape, Scissors, Pencil, Staple Gun, Sewing Machine or Needle & Thread, Zipper (if the user wants to install a zipper on couch cushions), and wood glue, nails & screws.
  3. Measurement:
After that, the user needs to measure the sofa along with its cushions considering the length, breadth & height of sofa as well as its cushions. The same measurement needs to be multiplied with each other and buy premium quality upholstery fabric above 10% of the calculated measurement. It has been recommended to buy stain resistant fabric considering the color of a room where the sofa will be placed.
  4. Remove the Old Fabric:
The next step will be to cut the old fabric from its seams carefully because the old fabric can be used as a pattern when cutting the new fabric. It is recommended to remove fabric from the sofa by sections.
  5. Cut New Fabric:
After that, the user needs to lay his new fabric facing down and place an old fabric on top of it by sections. The user needs to cut the new fabric according to the old fabric pattern allowing for the one-inch seam.
  6. Use Staple Gun To Attach Fabric:
The next step will be to attach the new fabric to the sofa with the help of a staple gun. The user needs to staple the fabric by sections and from one end to the other that will help in smoothening of fabric. Also, the user needs to make sure that the new fabric seam is placed at the place where the old fabric seam was placed and the staples should not be visible.
  7. Create Slipcovers:
In the next step, the user needs to create slipcovers for the cushions by cutting the new fabric similar to the pattern of cushions and sewing its edges together. The user can also add a zipper to slipcovers that will help in the removal and washing of slipcovers.
  8. Place The Cushions On The Sofa:
The last step in the process will be to place cushions on to the sofa and use it afterward.
