How To Reupholster A Round Swivel Chair: Steps & Items Needed

Steps And Items Needed To Reupholster A Round Swivel Chair

The semi-circular shape of a round swivel chair calls for fewer corners & seams than other chairs. If you want to reupholster your swivel chair then you need to collect the mentioned items and follow the steps for this process. Here are the items list and steps:

Items Needed

  • Needle-Nose Pliers & Sewing Machine
  • Seam Ripper (optional) & Needle And Thread
  • Scissors & Iron
  • Marker & Staple Gun And Staples
  • Tape Measure & Muslin

Steps

After collecting all the items, now you need to follow the given steps:
  • Remove the cushion from your chair and put it aside. Pull the staples now which are holding the fabric to the frame of your chair by using needle-nose pliers. Avert ripping the material because you will use it later when cutting out the new fabric for the chair. Remove screw-on feet or legs from the bottom of your chair as well.
  • Lay the fabric you removed on a flat surface & then cut it apart at the seams by using a scissor or by a seam ripper.
  • Now, spread out your new upholstery material on a flat surface, right side down. Put each piece of your material you removed from your chair on the new material. Trace each piece of your material you removed from your chair onto the new fabric by using a marker.
  • Next, cut the fabric by using a scissor along with the patterns you made before. You may first want to cut the fabric into sections & then cut out each individual piece of upholstery for your round swivel chair.
  • Turn your material right side up & sew the pieces together, one section at a time. You can also sew by your hand or by using a sewing machine loaded with thread grade-appropriate to the fabric. Remember that your upholstery-weight fabric can require stronger nylon thread.
  • Put the upholstery on your chair, fitting it taut around the chair’s arms & barrel or back.
  • Staple your upholstery along the inside edge of the seat, starting in the center & working your way to either corner. Pull your fabric tight and smoothing it. Once finished, turn your chair over & staple the fabric to the bottom of your chair, start your work from the corner, keeping it smooth. Make a small hole with your scissors in your new fabric over the hole where feet or legs attach to make re-attaching them accessible.
  • Measure the width & height of your seat where the cushion goes & cut a piece of muslin to fit by adding a 1/2 inch around the perimeter of muslin. Turn your chair back over & measure the width & height of the bottom of your chair, add a 1/2 around its perimeter as well. To make the edges of the muslin neats & straight, iron under the 1/2 inch of material you allowed for on each piece of the muslin.
  • Lay your muslin on your seat of the chair & staple it around its edges, evenly spacing staples about one-half inch apart. Using muslin as a base covers the upholstery that you heretofore stapled to the inside edge of the seat. Turn over your chair & staple the other piece of muslin to the bottom of your chair, evenly spacing staples about one-half inch apart. After attaching the muslin to the bottom of your chair, replace the legs & feet.
  • Lay your cushion on the fabric & then cut out the fabric to make a cover for your cushion. Sew together the material on three sides, leaving the back open. Put your cushion inside the cover & then hand-sew the fourth edge together, closing in your cushion. Put your cushion in the swivel chair with this hand-sewn edge at the back.
