Item List For This Project

  • Screwdriver & Staple remover
  • Seat foam and batting (optional) & Upholstery fabric
  • Tape measure & Felt pen
  • Scissors & Staple gun
  • Piping & Dust cover fabric

Steps For This Project

  1. First of all, you need to turn the bar seat over & then remove the screws attaching the seat to the frame.
  2. Next, remove the bottom dust cover, previous piping & also the upholstery, to do this you can also use an upholstery-style staple remover. Gently pry each staple out by using the flathead screwdriver to release all staple & pliers to pull it free.
  3. Now, simply remove old foam or batting if those layers need to be replaced, and then buy the new one.
  4. Place your new batting & foam on the seat, if essential. Fray the edges of your batting a bit, then wrap it around the seat edge.
  5. Next, measure your bar stool top from the bottom edge, up & across the diameter & then down to the bottom edge on the different side for the diameter of your seat. Add 3 inches & then cut your new fabric equal to this measurement. Measure the circumference of the seat & the cut the piping to the taken measurement and plus 3 inches.
  6. Cut a circle of dust cover fabric according to the same size as the seat less 1/2 inch. If you don't have the replacement dust cover fabric then you can sew-in the lightweight garment interfacing for dust cover.
  7. Now, lay your new upholstery fabric down on the wrong side visible & center the seat top on your fabric with the underside of the seat which is visible. Use a felt pen & then circle the screw insertion points.
  8. Slide your hand under your fabric & gently roll your fabric up and over the seat. The fabric will crumple and wrinkle; try to keep it smooth going over the edges and allow the wrinkles to settle on the underside of the seat. You need to remember that the underside of the seat is now easily visible on top; your seat is upside down. Grab your staple gun and then staple your fabric in place. Insert the staples non-convergent to your seat edge. Mark the screw insertion points after following the next step.
  9. Now, fold & staple your fabric at 4 points equally spaced around your seat & then go back & work on each section betwixt all the 4 points. walk around your seat you attach the fabric but don't move your seat around to meet you. Re-positioning your seat over & over could cause wrinkles & ripples in the fabric. Try to stretch your fabric just a bit as you smooth it up & over to the underside of your seat, but tight is better.
  10. Now you need to cut the fabric away at the marked screw insertion points; staple your fabric in place around the cutaway, if indispensable. Now, staple the piping in place around the underside of your seat. Insert the staples non intersecting to the edge & position the piping so the covered cord section is easily visible past the edge of your seat. Overlap the ends where they meet & then staple the excess onto your seat underside.
  11. Finally, position the dust cover over the underside and cut small holes over the screw insertion points. Staple the dust cover in place and then reattach the seat to your stool to complete your project.
