How To Reupholster A Leather Sofa: 5 Easy Steps To Reupholster A Couch

5 Easy Steps To Reupholster A Leather Sofa/Couch

After years of usage, the leather sofas may look worn or torn and in order to give the worn sofa an elegant and new look, the user needs to reupholster it by following the below-given steps:
  1. Remove Old Leather:
The first step will be to remove old leather from the sofa for which the user needs to flip the sofa upside down. After that, the user needs to take off the staples from under the sofa by using some flat tool or a flat head screwdriver. Also, the user needs to separate each piece of leather by using a seam ripper so that the old leather pieces can be used as a template for new leather.
  2. Cut New Leather:
After that, the user needs to cut the new leather as per the measurements of the old leather. First, the user needs to spread new leather on a flat surface with its right side facing down. After that, the user needs to place old leather pieces over the new leather facing downwards and pin them at a place by using sewing pins. It has been recommended to pin along the edges of each piece of leather and cut the new fabric accordingly by using electric scissors. Once the pieces of new leather are cut out, the user needs to remove the pins from each piece as well.
  3. Reupholster Back & Front:
The next step will be to reupholster the back and front of the sofa. First, the user needs to place back leather piece on a sofa and staple it down along the top edge of the sofa from the backside. After that, the user needs to place a front leather piece and flip the piece with right side facing down. Then, the user needs to drape the front leather piece down the back of the sofa and staple it on top of the back piece along the top edge from the backside. Once stapled, the user needs to flip the front leather piece over again in order to prevent the staples from being visible. After that, the user needs to pull down the leather tightly and staple it at each corner in order to allow the leather to hold its place. The user needs to continue pulling & stapling until the leather takes place on the inside bottom and sides of the sofa.
  4. Reupholster Arms & Bottom Front:
After that, the user needs to place arm leather pieces over the sofa arms and staple them down on the inside & outside back. Then, the user needs to place a bottom front piece of the leather over the sofa and staple it down at a place. It has been recommended to flip over the leather piece and staple it down along the front edge. After that, the user needs to flip over the leather piece again and staple it down at the bottom front of the sofa.
  5. Staple Remaining Sides:
Once all the leather pieces are attached to the sofa, the user needs to staple down the open sides of the back at a place that should cover the back of the arms as well. The backside piece should be stapled down to the underside of the sofa.
