Three Easy Parts & Items Needed To Re-upholster The Leather Dining Chair Seat

If the users won't like the seat fabric or the seat padding of the leather chair and are not comfortable according to them then the users can easily re-upholster it at home by gathering the below-mentioned materials and then following the below-described procedure:

Items Required

  • Hammer, Staple Gun, Plywood & Screws
  • Saw, Fabric, Marker Or Pen & Batting
  • Screwdriver & Electric Knife Or Rough Knife
  • Dust Cover Fabric, Foam Padding & Scissors

Part I- Detaching The Pre-existing Chair Covers

  • Remove The Seat: Start by detaching the seat from the base of the chair by unfastening its screws using the screwdriver that is affixed at the base. Then turn the driver over the left so as to unfasten all the screws but the users are advised to save all the detached screws so as to use them again in the future.
  • Remove The Staples: Then it is time to detach all the staples or the screws so as to unfasten the fabric and to detach the tacks the users need to use the hammer back or the multi-tool. Place the hammer back beneath the staples and then raise it upwards and then detach it accordingly. The users need to discard all the detached staples as they won't be used again.
  • Remove The Fabric: Once the users detached all the staples or the tacks then they need to lift up the fabric from the seat of the chair and then detach the fabric accordingly. If the users are having the plan of replacing the padding then they need to detach it as well. In most of the old leather chairs, the padding is usually made from the cloth and the hay and that is why the users need to replace it by using the foam.
  • Trim The Plywood Piece: Then the users need to examine the base of the seat and if required they need to replace it as well. The users need to be assured that the base of the seat should be sturdy and if in case they find out that the base of the seat is weak then they need to replace it. The users can easily buy the seat base or they can easily trim the plywood pieces as per the size dimension of the base of the seat and then affix down the new upholstery and the foam over it. One of the easiest ways of trimming the plywood piece as per the exact size dimension of the seat is by placing the detached seat over the surface of the plywood and then mark the lines by using the pen or the marker and then trim the plywood piece by using the hand saw.

Part II- Replace The Padding Or The Dust Covers

  • Trim The Dust Cover Fabric: Start by trimming the fabric of the dust cover as per the exact size dimensions of the seat and to do so the users need to place the new cover over the surface of the base of the seat and then trim it exactly as per the edges. Then they need to affix the trimmed cover over the top surface of the seat by the staples and then pull-down the fabric as they will staple each one of the edge.
  • Trim The Foam Padding: Then they need to trim the foam padding as per the size of the seat and to do so they need to place the detached seat frame over the foam layer and then mark down the line by using the marker. Then they need to use the knife so as to trim it as per the traced lines.
  • Affix The Trimmed Padding: Then they need to place the trimmed padding over the seat and then examine whether the corners are aligned perfectly. Then they need to staple the foam padding by using the staple gun and wrap down the padding at each one of the corners. Then trim the unneeded padding so as to get rid of the hanging or the bulky fabric.

Part III- Trimming And Affixing The New Upholstery

  • Trim The New Chair Fabric: Start by placing the seat cushion over the surface of the fabric and the fabric should be on the right side facing downward position. Then they need to trim the new fabric by leaving almost four inches extra at the corners.
  • Staple Down The Trimmed Fabric: Then they need to staple down the upholstery at the center point of each side and to do so they need to start by grasping the one side fabric and then staple it down accordingly so as to affix the fabric. The users need to repeat the same process with the remaining sides.
  • Trim The Unneeded Fabric: Then they need to fold down the new fabric at edges and then staple down the corners and then the users need to trim down the unneeded fabric by using the scissors. Trimming the unneeded fabric prevents the loosening and the hanging of the seat fabric.
  • Re-attach The Chair Seat: Once the users successfully reupholstered the seat then they need to re-attach the seat to the chair frame by using the pre-saved screws respectively.
