How To Reupholster A High Back Dining Chair: Easy 2 Methods To Reupholster

2 Methods To Reupholster A High Back Dining Chair

By following the given 2 methods, you can easily reupholster your high back dining chair, Here are the 2 methods:

Method 1: Removing The Old Chair Covers

  • First of all, you need to unscrew the dining chair seat from the base. You can use a screwdriver to loosen the screws attaching the dining chair seat to the chair base. Turn the screwdriver to the left to loosen the screws. Make sure to save the screws for reattaching the seat to your chair base.
  • Remove staples or tacks to loosen the fabric. Use the back of your hammer or a re-upholstery multi-tool to remove the tacks that are holding your fabric onto the dining seat. Work the end of the tool under the staple or tack & then pull it up.
  • After removing all of the staples or tacks from your chair, lift the fabric off of from your seat. If you are going to replace the seat’s padding then you need to lift this off of the seat as well
  • Check the base of your seat and replace it if necessary. Make sure that your seat base is sturdy. If it appears weak or damaged, then you may want to replace it. Cut a piece of plywood according to the dimensions of your seat base & attach the new foam & upholstery to it.

Method 2: Replacing the Dust Cover and Padding

  • Place the fabric(dust cover) over the seat base & cut around the edges of the set to get the exact dimensions. This piece will be hidden under your foam & fabric. Place the dust cover onto the seat base & staple around the edges to secure it to your seat base. Make sure that the fabric is taut. You may want to place one staple at the center of each side to start & work outwards on each side, pulling your fabric as you go for the next step
  • Cut 2 in (5.1 cm) padding(thick foam) to the dimensions of your seat. Place your seat frame directly onto the thick foam. Trace around by pen or marker. Then, use a serrated knife or electric knife to cut out your foam using the lines you traced before.
  • After you've cut out the foam, place it onto your seat frame so that the edges of the foam & seat are lined up. Place the foam directly on the batting & the seat frame on top of the thick foam. Ensure that the foam & seat are centered on the batting.
  • Cut the batting 2 in (5.1 cm) past the edges of the seat. The edges of your batting need to go up & over the edges of the back of your seat by 2 inches (5.1 cm) on each side. Check to ensure that you can wrap the batting around by 2 inches (5.1 cm) on all sides & then cut the batting to these dimension.
  • Staple the center of each edge of the batting first & then continue stapling along the edges on each side.
Pull the padding taut along with each edge while stapling it. Work from the center staple out towards a corner of your seat & repeat this on both sides of the staple. Then, do the same thing for each of the other sides.
  • Collect the excess fabric at 1 corner of your seat & then fold it over at the corner and then staple in the center of the fold to secure your fabric at the corner of your seat. If you see that there is still some extra fabric then fold it again & place another staple over the fold to secure it.
  • Cut the extra batting 1 inch (2.5 cm) from the staples, when the batting is secured to your seat, cut the extra to reduce the bulk & avoid any hanging fabric. Cut about 1 inch (2.5 cm) from the staples all around the inside of your seat.
