How To Reupholster A Dining Chair Seat: Steps To Reupholster A Dining Room Chair Seat

How To Reupholster A Dining Room Chair Seat?

In order to change the look of any dining room chair having removable seat, the user can simply Reupholster its seat by following the below-given steps:
  1. Unscrew The Seat:
The first step will be to unscrew the dining chair seat from its base with the help of a screwdriver. Once the screws are removed, the user needs to place them at a safe place for future use.
  2. Remove Fabric & Padding:
In order to remove fabric & padding from the seat, it is necessary to remove staples or tacks from the seat that are holding the fabric. The recommended tool for the step is a re-upholstery multi-tool or the back of the hammer. The tacks or staples need to be discarded as a staple gun will be used to reupholster the seat. Once tacks or staples are removed, the user needs to pull the fabric & padding off the dining chair.
  3. Replace Seat Base (If Needed):
In case, the seat base is weak or damaged rather than sturdy, the user needs to replace it by purchasing a seat base from the market or else by cutting a piece of plywood with similar dimensions.
  4. Attach Dust Cover To The Top:
The reupholster process starts with this step in which the user has to cut dust cover fabric as per the dimensions of the seat. The user needs to place the dust cover over the base of the seat and cut it around the edges. After that, the user needs to place the dust cover on top of the seat and staple it with the help of a staple gun.
  5. Cut Foam Padding:
The next step after that will be to cut the foam padding similar to the dimensions of the seat by placing the seat over the foam and tracing around the edges of the seat using pen or marker followed by cutting the foam with the help of a knife.
  6. Cut & Attach The Batting With Foam:
After that, the user needs to cut the batting by placing the foam on to the batting directly and then placing the seat on top of the foam. Once they are placed in line, the user needs to cut batting by keeping in mind that the edges of the batting should cover and go up the edges of the back seat by at least two inches. The batting edges need to be stapled with the back of the seat in a similar fashion as it was cut down with the help of a staple gun. It has been recommended to fold the batting at the corner and secure it with staple followed by removing the excess batting in order to prevent the fabric from hanging.
  7. Replace Fabric:
The next step will be to place a seat on top of the fabric making sure that the right side of the seat, as well as the right side of the fabric, is facing downwards. The user needs to cut the fabric more than 3 to 4 inches from the edges of the seat. Once the fabric is cut, the user can staple it with the back of the seat using a staple gun similar to the way he stapled the batting with the seat. The corners of the fabric need to be folded and stapled followed by cutting the excess fabric around the edges.
  8. Attach Dust Cover To The Bottom:
Once the fabric is stapled, the user needs to cut another dust cover similar to the size of the seat and attach it to the bottom of the seat using a staple gun making sure to cut excess dust cover around the edges.
  9. Reattach The Seat:
The last step will be to reattach the seat with the chair base by using the screws saved earlier for future use. The above-mentioned steps can be followed to reupholster other chairs as well.
