How To Reupholster A Club Chair: Items And Steps Needed

Items And Steps Needed To Reupholster A Club Chair

A club chair is also known as the fauteuil comfortable which is a French invention that is padded, deeply upholstered & slenderly rounded. To reupholster a club chair then you need to collect the given items and to follow all the steps. Here are the item list and steps for this process:

Things You Will Need

  • Club chair & Funky upholstery fabric
  • Batting & Muslin or cambric
  • Pliers or flat-head screwdriver & Pencil or dressmaker's chalk
  • Scissors & Sandpaper
  • Stripper, primer, enamel & Paintbrush
  • Paintbrush & Staple gun
  • Small padded mallet

Steps For This Process

  • First of all, you need to collect lengths of different upholstery material to match the design of your chair. Then take your club chair to your work area and then take it apart.
  • Remove the staples that hold the fabric of your club chair in place, grab the upholstery near a staple with a pair of pliers and then twist the fabric away from the frame of your club chair because it is easier than trying to tug the staples uninterrupted out.
  • Now, set your old upholstery aside to use as patterns for cutting the new pieces. You will need this later to reupholster the chair with new fabric. Save the tacking strips & tacks to use them again.
  • Figure out the batting & leave it in place if the batting is still usable. If the batting needs replacing, remove it as you did with the fabric.
  • Tackle the feet now, simply sand them to create a "grabby" surface for new the new layer of paint and then prime the wood. Once dries, now apply 2 coats of high-gloss enamel in a vivid color that picks up one color from the new upholstery.
  • Cut your upholstery fabric, using the old pieces as patterns & adding about two inches to the perimeter of each piece for folding over & fastening.
  • Cut any new batting at the same time. If you want a boho look, use disparate designs for each piece of your fabric: the center back, arms, and side panels.
  • Now, staple the batting on first, in the order, you removed your old batting. Do the same with the fabric on your club chair this unremarkably means starting with the front, back & front arm panels, progressing to the seat, right & left side panels,& the bottom, trimming the excess fabric after it is stapled in place. Add the tacking strips as you go.
  • Now, insert the tacking strips along with the edge of your new fabric where the old tacking strips were, at least one inch in from the edge of your fabric. The tacks poke up through with the "right" side of your upholstery fabric. Fold your fabric over the strip so the tacks now face your chair frame & are hidden under the fold of your fabric. This will gives the fabric panel a neat edge.
  • Tap the tacks into your club chair frame with a padded mallet to avert tearing your fabric that is layered over them. Just pull the panel taut & then hammer your fabric over the hidden tacking strip to secure the material. The finished edge of your panel is now firmly tacked to your club chair.
  • This is your final step, staple the final piece of the muslin or cambric, turned under around the entire edge, to the bottom of your club chair. Right the club chair, and now the chair is ready to take its funky place in your decor.

Tip & Warnings

Tip: Always remember to replace the piping that defined the lines of the club chair by using the same cord, covered in a new fabric that contrasts sharply with the upholstery material for the chair.
Warning: Refinish the wooden legs of your club chair while you have it stripped to avert damaging new upholstery with a stripper or with the pain.
