Now take a palm sander in order to remove the rest of the rust from your furniture. If you are not able to use a palm sander then you can also sand by your hands but it takes too much time. Sand your entire furniture with sandpaper (80- to 100-grit).
  2. Crevices And Curves & Clean: Now sand your furniture by your hands to reach the harder areas, like the curves of the arms and legs. When the rust is gone from the furniture now, switch to 150-grit sandpaper or higher grit sandpaper. Continue your sanding process until the entire furniture feels smooth to the touch. wipe the dust with a solvent such as acetone to ensure that the furniture is clean and ready for painting and priming process .
  3. Apply Primer: After cleaning the furniture now, prime it with the help of a high-quality rust preventive spray primer. If you have the light colors then choose a white primer and if you have the darker color then use a darker primer for this process. Start spraying slowly for an accordant spray pattern to avert drips and over spray. Use a forth & back motion by following the natural lines of your furniture. You need to apply 2-3 light coats, allow your primer to dry betwixt each application. Once the primer dries fully, lightly sand your furniture with very fine sandpaper if your surface feels a tiny coarse. Wipe off your furniture with a tack cloth to remove the dust before following the further steps.
  4. Spray Paint: Now, use spray paint, that too high quality oil based type, for the metal furniture. Spray it by following a back and forth motion, hold your paint can far enough away for an accordant spray pattern to prevent drips and over spray. Follow the natural lines of your metal furniture to coat it equally. Apply 2-3 light coats of paint and allow each coat to dry completely to the touch betwixt applications.
  5. Fix Drip: If you face any drip then you need to lightly drag a clean chip brush on the affected area to fix it before moving on. Chip brushes are cheap, disposable natural bristle brushes will work well for the touch-ups.
  6. Protect: Cover your metal furniture with rust-inhibiting spray paint. Take a clear oil-based urethane which gives UV protection to help prevent fading the color and finish. Hold the spray paint can 10” to 12” away and spray using in back and forth motions. Follow the natural lines of your metal furniture to coat it. If you want a smooth finish then lightly sand between coats with 200-grit or higher grit sandpaper.
  7. Dry: Let your metal furniture cure for 24 hours in a warm, dry and well-ventilated area. Now your metal furniture rust-free, repainted and ready for a few upcoming years.
