Steps And Items Needed To Restore Faded Wood Furniture

If you have a piece of old antique furniture which has been faded after a long period of time and you want to restore it anyhow, instead of throwing it out, you can restore it, you just need to collect all the given items and follow the given steps to restore your old faded wood furniture. Here are the items list and steps for this process:

Things You Will Need

  • Chemical-Resistant Gloves & Wood Cleaner
  • Toothbrush & Sharpened Wood Dowel
  • No. 0000 Steel Wool & Dust-Free Cloths
  • Shellac, Paintbrush & Paste Wax
  • Metal Can With Lid

Steps For This Process

  • Firstly remove old wax & dirt from your wood furniture by using a lint-free towel dipped in the cleaning solution. Buy ready-to-use wood cleaner to remove old wax from wood furniture surfaces.
  • If the wood cleaner is not available then you need to mix 4 parts of water and 1 part ammonia. Otherwise, you can also use paint thinner or mineral spirits. Always test your cleaning solution in an unnoticeable area first to ensure no unfavorable reactions will occur on the furniture.
  • Scrape away any old wax and dirt from the tight spaces by using a toothbrush soaked in the created mixture. If your furniture has elegant carvings with small details then carefully remove grime & dirt from these crevices by using sharpened wood dowel the size of a pencil in conjunction with your toothbrush.
  • Rub your wood with steel wool(No. 0000) to remove tough stains & stubborn dirt. The superfine steel wool needs to be dipped in your cleaning solution. Always scrub your wood according to the grain of the wood. Use light pressure even your steel wool is ultra-fine then applying much pressure will remove the finish from your wood furniture.
  • Set your wood furniture aside to thoroughly dry and then apply coat shellac by a paintbrush over the entire wood furniture. Allow your furniture to dry. Once dried fully then gently buff it with No. 0000 steel wool.
  • Next you need to apply the paste wax according to the product guidance because some paste wax needs to be dipped in the water while others require a dry cloth. Allow the applied paste wax to wholly dry.
  • Buff your wood furniture to get high shine with a clean & lint-free towel. Leave all the used clothes in a metal sealed can. Check with your municipality for proper disposal guidance of any used hazardous materials. Many chemicals that are used to restore wood can unconsciously combust if not handled properly.
