How To Restore Faded Cast Aluminum Patio Furniture: Steps And Items Needed

Steps And Items Needed To Restore Aluminum Patio Furniture

Your aluminum patio furniture has to face all the four-season & also all sorts of inclement weather. These types of punishing weather conditions can easily degrade the structure & surface of any material. The metal furniture stands up better in harsh conditions but the ferrous metals such as iron & steel can rust easily. The aluminum does not rust easily and cast aluminum also has strength comparable to ferrous metals like iron or steel. If your cast-aluminum patio furniture has become weathered with use & time then you can easily restore it with the right materials & technique. All you have to do is to collect the mentioned items and to follow all the given steps to finish your work successfully. Here are the item list and steps for this process:

Item List And Steps For This Project

  • 100-grit sandpaper or handheld rotary tool with fine-grit sanding accessory
  • Garden hose
  • Clean cloths
  • Mineral spirits
  • Respirator
  • Polyurethane paint
  • Epoxy primer
  • Once you've collected all the required items, now you need to follow the given steps.
    • First of all, you need to sand your cast-aluminum patio furniture with moist sandpaper(120 grit) or by a handheld rotary tool with a 120-grit sanding accessory until it has a dull and even surface.
    • Next, spray off any debris which comes after the sanding process with the help of a garden hose.
    • Now, let dry the surface of your cast-aluminum furniture by using a clean cloth.
    • Once done, now clean the sanded surface of your aluminum furniture with the help of mineral spirits applied with a clean cloth. Simply rub it slowly.
    • After the rubbing process now move your cast-aluminum furniture to a well-ventilated area out of direct sunlight.
    • Put on a respirator(a device designed to protect you from inhaling hazardous atmospheres).
    • Once done, spray a coat of epoxy primer over the entire surface of your cast furniture and then allow the epoxy primer to dry wholly according to the manufacturer's instructions.
    • This is your final step, spray a coat of polyurethane topcoat paint to the whole surface of your furniture and then allow the topcoat paint to dry wholly according to the manufacturer's instructions.
    • Warning: Polyurethane paint and epoxy primer emit the hazardous fumes. Be sure that the respirator has fresh seals and also fresh filters. Although some sources say that primer is unnecessary when the aluminum surface is properly prepared & the proper paint is chosen topcoat without primer is not likely to stick well on the surface of your cast furniture, especially on furniture exposed to the outdoor elements.
