How To Restore Dry Leather: Steps To Repair Dry Leather Car Seats & Couch/Sofa

Leather furniture is beautiful and durable but it may result in the cracks and other types of damages due to prolonged use. Leather furniture can be easily repaired using the repair kit. The dryness in leather is very common and can be treated by using good quality leather conditioner. The dry leather can also be treated using home remedies like oil and vinegar too.

How To Restore Dry Leather Couch/Sofa?

Steps to repair/restore dry leather couch and sofa are mentioned below:
  1. Preparing Cleanser: Fill the bucket with warm water and add the liquid dishwasher soap and one tablespoon of the stain remover and stir well.
  2. Clean The Surface: Wet the lint-free cloth into the solution and wipe the leather surface in the circular motions to remove all built ups. Repeat the process until it cleans properly.
  3. Rinse: Dip the soft cloth into the clean water and rinse the sofa or couch with the same to remove all soapy residue.
  4. Dry: Allow the leather to dry completely.
  5. Repair Kit: For repairing cracks and dryness the leather repair kit is required.
  6. LayDown Paper/Cloth: Before fixing, lay down paper or cloth beneath the furniture piece to carry on the task.
  7. Repair Compound: Pour leather repair compound over the sponge and rub it over the entire surface properly and allow it to dry. The process needs to be repeated 3 to 4 times until the results are achieved.
  8. Colorant: Shake the colorant well and pour it on the sponge. Rub the thin layer of the sponge over the entire surface thoroughly and let it sit there for 30 minutes. Repeat the process second time as well.
  9. Leather Conditioner: Once dried, Use leather conditioner over the leather with the help of a soft lint-free cloth.


How To Repair The Dry Leather Car Seat?

  1. Repair Tears: The tears can be repaired using the leather repair kit and matching color colorant.
  2. Cleaning: Rub the mild soap to the damp rag and clean the entire car seat with the same to remove all dirt and grime built up.
  3. Dry It: Once cleaned let the seat dry completely.
  4. Trim: Trim the area if the treads are out around the torn area using sharp scissors.
  5. Glue: Apply glue into the area that is affected as well on its edges. Let it dry.
  6. Leather Filler: Apply the leather filler inside the cracked area with the palette knife. Leave it to dry before application of another one.
  7. Sanding: Once the filler is dried use fine-grit sanding paper to sand the surface and continue until the filler becomes even with the leather.
  8. Wipe: Use clean Wet cloth to wipe the car seat to remove all sanding residue and allow it to dry.
  9. Colorant: Use color matching colorant to the filler using cloth and let it dry. Repeat two or three times till it matches perfectly with the car seats.
  10. Sealant: For protection apply the sealant over the surface.
