  • Mineral Spirits, Glass Jar & Clean Cloth
  • 0000 Steel Wool, Denatured Alcohol
  • Paint Thinner, Stain, Paintbrush & Dry Cloth
  • Oil-Based Polyurethane
  • 20-Grit Sandpaper

Step 1: Clean The Wood

  1. First and foremost, you need to clean the wood & for that, put a little bit of the mineral spirit into the glass jar. Soak in a clean cloth in the mineral spirits and then start brushing it on the wood in the wood’s grain direction.
  2. After the above step is done, then you need to soak a piece of 0000 steel wool into the mineral spirits and smoothly wipe the wood.
  3. Finally, spread denatured alcohol to the wood with the help of clean cloth in order to get rid of the mineral spirits. Make sure to proceed & use the cloth in the same direction as the grain and also you need to use long strokes.

Step 2: Removing Old Finishes And Applying A New Finish

  1. Firstly, you need to spread paint thinner to the wood, that has been cleaned in the above step, with the help of clean cloth in order to eliminate the old polish or wax.
  2. Next, with the help of a paintbrush & using long even strokes, rub the stain on the wood. Make sure to eliminate the additional stain with the help of a dry cloth & then give it some time to dry completely.
  3. After that, spread an oil-based polyurethane with the help of a cloth and then give it at least 2 to 3 hours to dry completely.
  4. Now, start the sanding process by simply sanding the surface with the help of 20-grit sandpaper. During the sanding process, you need to make sure not to apply too much pressure, instead, go with very light pressure and then proceed in the direction of the grain.
  5. Finally, you need to get rid of the dust with a cloth and then spread a second coat of oil-based polyurethane. Give it some time to dry completely before using the furniture again.
