Steps And Items Needed To Replace Wrought Iron Porch Railing

If you want to replace and then install the wrought iron porch railing then you just need to collect all the given items and follow all the given steps carefully:

Things You Will Need

  • Socket And Ratchet
  • Drawing Pad & Measuring Tape
  • Rotary Hammer With The 3/8-Inch Concrete Drill Bit
  • Electrical Tape, Shop Vacuum & Caulking Gun
  • Concrete Epoxy, Tube
  • 3/8-Inch-By-3-Inch Wedge Anchors With Bolts
  • 1/4-Inch-By-2-Inch Lag Bolts

Step 1: Removing The Iron Porch Railing

  1. First of all, you need to loosen & then remove the old fixed anchor bolts where the base of the porch railing are attached to stairs & landing by using a ratchet & socket. Now you need to remove lag bolts that are attached to the end of your railing to your house or on a porch post.
  2. Lift off your iron railing assembly and lay it flat on your ground. Make an artwork of your iron railing assembly and then measure & also note the given dimensions: Sizes of the post bases, distance from post to post, the height of each post, and also the overall length of your handrail.
  3. Take your artwork drawing to an ornamental iron-works shop and have your new railing fabricated using the desired style of your iron posts & the railings.
  4. Drill 1/2-inch holes for anchor bolts in your post bases & paint your railings in your desired color. Attain the number of 3/8-inch-by-3-inch wedge anchors based on the connected number of holes in your post bases.

Step 2: Installing The New Iron Railing

  1. First of all, you need to position your iron new railing assembly where the old railing was removed. Coordinate the upper end of your railing at the face of your house or facing the porch post. Coordinate all the outer edges of each post base one inch from the edge of your landing or the concrete stairs.
  2. Mark the concrete at the whereabouts of your holes in the post bases, and set your new iron railing assembly aside.
  3. Next you need to set up the rotary hammer with a 3/8-inch concrete drill bit. Measure 3 inches from the tip of your drill bit, and make individual wraps of electrical tape as an innuendo for drilling 3-inch-deep holes for your anchor sleeves.
  4. Next you next to drill the holes for your sleeves at each marked location & clean out the holes with the help of a vacuum cleaner.
  5. Then you need to set up a caulking gun with the help of a concrete epoxy tube. Disburse a small amount of your concrete epoxy into each hole which you've drilled & install 3/8-inch-by-3-inch wedge-anchor sleeves in each drilled hole.
  6. Position your new iron railing in place on your concrete & then align the holes in your post bases with the all installed anchor sleeves. Install your anchor bolts at each drilled hole and into your anchor sleeves. Tighten each bolt moderately with the ratchet & socket.
  7. Finally you need to attach the upper end of your new railing at your house or the porch post by using a 1/4-inch-by-2-inch lag bolt at each hole which you've drilled, using the befitting socket on your ratchet. Tighten all the anchor bolts firmly. Repeat the installation process to install your new railing at the other side of your stairs & landing.
