How To Replace Pipes Under Kitchen Sink: Step By Step Procedure & Items Required

Step By Step Procedure & Items Required To Replace Pipes Under Kitchen Sink

The pipes that are beneath the kitchen sink usually appear to look scary specifically when the users are having the 2 sinks but it is quite easy to replace the sink pipes even if the users are having the little experience related to the plumbing. The twisted pipes that are also known as the P-traps attach the sink drain and the water pipes by confining fitting and the users can also unfasten these pipes without using any tool. If in case the users are replacing their pipes so as to fix up the leak then it is very necessary to examine the new pipe alignment before they will install those pipes. If these pipes won't fit as per the alignment then the confining fitting won't get sealed properly and the pipes will keep on getting the leaks. The users can easily replace the pipes under the kitchen sink at home by gathering the below-mentioned materials and then following the below-defined procedure:

Materials Required

  • Bucket & Measuring Tape
  • Adjustable Pliers & Hacksaw

Step I: Detach The Pre-existing Pipes

  • Start by detaching the pre-existing plumbing which is the basic step to restore the drain pipe. The users need to use a few correct tools to unfasten the stucked pipes. They need to place the bucket beneath the twisted P-trap portions and then turn off the water faucet so that the user won't get drowned if in case any person runs on the water faucet while they are working.
  • The users need to examine the pipe configurations and calculate the measurements with the measuring tape if required and then purchase the perfect components and trim the pipes as per the actual size. The users need to unfasten the connections of the P-trap with the tailpieces of the sink that are the pipes that usually extend downwards the sink and to the drain as well.
  • The users can easily perform this step by extorting each nut by using the hands and then rotating it in the counterclockwise direction. If in case the nut does not get turned off so easily then they are advised to use the adjustable pliers. The users are advised to apply some lubricant over the surface of the nuts so as to unfasten its threads.
  • They need to lift away the traps within the connections by swiveling them in the upside downwards direction so as to drain out all the water directly to the bucket and then place them aside. If in case the traps are affixed to the common tee then unfasten those connections so as to deatch the tee. Then dismantle the leftover pipes in an exact way. If in case the users are only having the one sink then they have to worry about the additional trap, additional pipes, or the tee as well. Then they need to detach the tailpieces of the drain if required. If in case they are short or corroded then it indicates the leaking problem. In order to detach the one, they need to unfasten it within the drain by rotating it in the clockwise directions by using the adjustable pliers accordingly.

Step II: Replace The Drain Pipes Of The Sink

  • With the pre-existing pipes out of their way, the users are perfectly fit to install their new pipes beneath the sink of the kitchen. The key factor to install the new pipes is by getting the perfect fitting and fastening the connections so as to avoid the leaks.
  • The users need to screw within the tailpieces within the drainpipe top. If in case the drainpipes are within the floor then they need to extend their tailpieces to near about two feet upwards to the cabinet base. Then they need to trim the tailpiece by using the hacksaw so as to fit perfectly with the ones they have detached. They need to use the pipe of the same diameter.
  • The users are advised to use the PVC pipes as these kinds of pipes won't get corroded so easily. The users need to put together the pipes with the confined fittings, fastening the nuts with the hand till they are not completely ready to install the pipes.
  • The users then need to put together the trap end and then fasten the nuts. Once they completed the assembling process then they need to fill up the sink and then unbind the drain so as to check the leaks. Then if they find out any leaks they need to fasten up the connections by using the adjustable pliers accordingly.
