The railing can be built or set up using wood or metal, like wrought iron, usually ascertained or established by the material used to build the deck or porch, with wooden railings used on a wooden deck, & metal railings used on a concrete porch. If you want to replace a wooden railing with wrought iron for some reason like if it is damaged or wants to give your railing a more attractive look, then you can replace it easily by following the below-mentioned process carefully:

Step 1: Removing The Wood Railing

  1. Remove Top Rail: First of all, take out or disconnect the top rail from the posts. If the railing is fastened or secured with nails to the posts, take it away from the posts with the help of a pry bar in order to loosen it. Take off the nails as well, which takes hold of the rail in place, with the help of a claw hammer.
  2. Cut Through The Nails: Trim through the nails that secure the ends of the top rail to the wall or end posts with the help of a reciprocating saw. Make sure to wear safety goggles when you are dealing with the saw. If the top rail is fastened or tightened with a screw or screws into place, loosen the screws with the help of a drill or power screwdriver.
  3. Tap The Spindles: Tap or bang the spindles over with the help of a hammer in order to loosen them and pull them away from the bottom rail.
  4. Cut Through The Nails: Finally, trim through the nails again that secure the ends of the bottom rail to the end posts or wall with the help of a reciprocating saw.

Step 2: Installing The Wrought Iron Railing

  1. Place The Railing Into Position: Firstly, put down the railing into place, for a limited period of time, where it's being installed. Mark the screw holes in the bottom of the railing onto the surface of the deck or porch before removing the railing.
  2. Drill Pilot Holes: Now, drill pilot holes into the porch or deck where you have marked the screw holes. If in case the surface is made of wood, then you can use a standard drill and drill bit. For the concrete surface, it is best to use a hammer drill having a masonry drill bit. Wear safety goggles when dealing with the drill.
  3. Remove The Bolts: Next, pull out the bolts from the concrete sleeve anchors. Insert the sleeve anchors into the holes, tapping them smoothly with the help of a hammer in order to get them flush with the surface if needed. For a wooden deck or porch, you can skip this step.
  4. Put Railing Back Into Place: Now, it is time to put the railing back into place on the deck or porch, gathering together the screw holes on the railing with the holes you drilled.
  5. Attach The Railing: Finally, secure & affix the railing to the surface of the deck or porch. For a wooden surface, you can use galvanized screws, and for the concrete anchors on a concrete surface, you can use the bolts.
