How To Repair Textured Walls: Instructions For Repairing Knockdown Textured Walls

Step By Step Instructions For Repairing Knockdown Textured Walls

Knockdown texture, which is usually identified correctly after the process of spraying mud onto a wall as well as flattening it with a texturizing knife, is one of the best & well-known finishing options for walls. However, when a wall is damaged, it takes somewhat more than applying some joint compound on and repainting. A smooth spot on a textured wall looks inconvenient, so, when you repair a knockdown textured wall, you need to apply a new texture to the repair process. Fortunately, knockdown is one of the extremely easy textures to achieve on the condition that you have the right tools.

Thing's You Will Need

  • Painter’s Tape & Dropcloth
  • Sanding Block, Cloth & Joint Compound
  • Tray, Joint kKnife & Drywall Tape(Optional)
  • Primer & Paintbrushes
  • Spray Texture & Scrap Drywall
  • Texturizing Knife & Touch-Up Paint

Step 1: Preparation

First of all, pull out the furniture from the working area and tape off any trim. Put down a dropcloth on the floor in order to protect against splatters. Sand the damaged area firmly & gently with the help of a sanding block, before wiping it down using a damp cloth in order to remove dust & let this dry fully.

Step 2: Mix Your Joint Compound

Now, combine or put together a batch of joint compounds in a small tray in accordance with the manufacturer's directions. Spread a small bit of compound onto a joint knife before applying this to the wall. Use a knife in order to push the compound into the hole or crack, before using the edge of the knife to get rid of any excess compound from the surface. Keep the compound as thin as possible before allowing it to dry as per the label directions.
Note: As you work with the knife, make sure to wipe off excess mud from the blade using a wet cloth. This will make sure that the excess mud doesn’t collect and damage the spacing between splatters.

Step 3: Apply A Second Coat Of Compound

Apply a second coat of compound, exactly the same way, as soon as the first coat is dry, keeping it thin. If the damage is deep, you need to apply drywall tape after the first coat of compound, before applying another coat on top of the tape. This will help to prevent the crack or hole from spreading while still smoothing out the wall surface.

Step 4: Sand The Area

Now, it is time to sand the area in order to make sure that it is smooth as well as even with the surrounding wall, and then wipe it down with the help of a damp cloth in order to remove dust. You can apply knockdown texture to a smooth surface. Let it dry, before applying one coat of primer to the patched area and allow it to dry as well.

Step 5: Take Some Time To Practice

Spray a small bit of texture onto a scrap piece of drywall before you practice knocking it down with the help of a texturizing knife, allowing the mud to set marginally. Play with the adjustments on the nozzle in order to determine the spray that matches your existing wall texture.

Step 6: Spray The Texture On The Patch

Spray the texture onto the patch with the utmost care, making sure not to go outside of the area. Remember that you are going to flatten the texture, therefore, it will spread marginally outside of where you initially apply it. Work slowly, stepping back from the wall regularly in order to make sure that you don’t apply too much.

Step 7: Flatten The Splatters

Allow the texture to set in accordance with the manufacturer's directions, before using a texturizing knife to smooth out the splatters, flattening them marginally to the wall. Work with a light hand, making sure you don’t create any gouges or uneven spots. Allow the texture to dry completely.

Step 8: Apply Touch-Up Paint

Finally, apply one to two coats of touch-up paint to the area in order to make sure that it matches & complements the rest of the wall, waiting for each coat to dry & then proceed to the next coat. If you do not have touch-up paint for the wall that you are looking to patch, take a small paint chip off the wall before taking it to a paint specialist for an exact match. Buy a completely new can of paint simply by brand and color name can give you a clear or apparent variation in color betwixt the existing wall and the patch.
