Steps To Get Rid Of Scratches From Wood Veneer Furniture

The veneer is a type of thin covering of fine wood that is fixed with glue on the surface of wooden furniture such as wood table and some special type of chairs and wardrobe. When your wooden furniture is unprotected in humidity for a long period of time it results in veneer crack, blister, or peel. Veneer wooden furniture can easily get scratches and stains easily. The life span of veneer furniture is about 10-15 years if you take good care of it, but the veneer furniture still needs to be refinished or cleaned after a short period of time but sometimes this process can be lengthy and pricey. If you are facing these types of issues then you need to follow the given 4 methods, and steps carefully. Here are all the 4 methods and steps:

Clean The Surface

  • Clean: Firstly you need to clean your wood veneer table by using a high-quality wood furniture cleaner to remove all dirt and dust from the surface of your wood veneer furniture, you need to pay additional attention to the scratched area of your furniture.
  • Dry: Once you cleaned your veneer furniture then you need to dry the cleaner on the surface of your veneer furniture with the help of rag.
  • Apply: Finally you need to apply furniture wax before buffing it thoroughly by using a new cloth because this will remove any minor or large scratches from the surface of the wood veneer furniture.

Dye To Match Color

  • Dye: If you want to match a color then you need to dye the scratched surface of your furniture by using simple shoe polish, a brown crayon, or iodine. If you are going to use iodine then you will need a differently aged chemical which depends on the color of your veneer; iodine helps to darken a deeper brown color with age process.
For the mahogany type of veneer furniture, you need to use new iodine. For brown or mahogany stained cherry use older, darkened iodine. Simply make a solution of 50/50 % of iodine & denatured alcohol to stain a walnut veneer scratch.
  • Brazil Nut: You can also use the meat of the pecan, brazil nut and black walnut to dye the surface of you veneer furniture by rubbing the meat of the nut directly into the scratch affected area.
  • Be Careful: Be careful that do not allow the meat of the brazil nut to get on the rest of the piece, because the oil will easily stain the veneer furniture.

Wax Stick

  • Wax Stick: For this step, you need to take a wax stick that matches the damaged or scratched area of your veneer furniture and then push it into the scratch by using a credit card or similar plastic object, burnish the wax stick level with the surface of your veneer furniture.
  • Paintbrush: After you filled the scratch completely, you can also add grain lines with the help of a small art paintbrush.
  • Paste Wax: Final step for this method, simply apply a paste wax over the entire surface of your veneer furniture and hand polish it. Repeat if necessary.

Try A Commercial Scratch Repair Liquid

  • Pour: After cleaning your veneer furniture piece thoroughly, simply pour a small amount of scratch repair over the damaged area of your veneer furniture.
  • Smooth: Smooth it into the scratch and then remove any excess scratch repair liquid with the help of a putty knife (or credit card).
  • Paste Wax: Finally, you need to apply paste wax to the entire surface and hand buff with a clean rag.

Optional Step

This is the optional step for this process but it can help you if you are facing a stubborn scratch on the surface of your veneer furniture. If you want to fix this issue then heat up your clothes iron without filling water in it, as steam from your cloth iron can melt the glue on your wood veneer furniture while doing this process. Next, you need to place a clean cloth over the surface of your veneer surface as well and then hold your hot iron over it. Always remember that do not touch the surface with your hot iron. In some cases, the heat which comes from your hot iron will easily raise the surface of the veneer to make the scratch less detectable.
