  1. First of all, detach any hardware or you can wrap it with the help of painter's tape. The hardware parts that you need to detach may include knobs, hinges, etc. They need to be detached due to the reason that they may be a hindrance in the repair work, particularly those that run by the sides of bookcases and cabinets.
  2. The next step is to cleanse your cabinets at least one week before starting the repairing process. The surface must be rigorously dry before using repair materials. Make sure to clean the cabinet with the help of mild soap and water, and then make it dry with the help of paper towels. Clean again with the help of a TSP (TriSodium Phosphate) solution that helps in getting rid of mold and mildew.
  3. Now, fill the area that has been chipped, with the help of a finishing filler, suitable for melamine. Fillers are obtainable in custom colors, therefore, get a color that exactly matches your melamine cabinet. As soon as it dries, smoothen the chipped area with the help of medium-grit sandpaper. Repeat, if required.
  4. Next, wear a face mask in order to protect yourself from fumes. Spread one coat of basic primer or oil-based stain-blocking primer to the affected portion with the help of a small paintbrush. Give the primer nearly 6 hours in order to dry and harden. Smooth using sandpaper if necessary.
  5. Spread melamine laminate finish paint to the chipped surface, applying the paint with the help of a fine-bristled and sponge paintbrush, mixing as you go.
