How To Repair Furniture Upholstery: Patch & Sewing Methods

How To Repair A Tear In An Upholstery Fabric Furniture?

There are several methods by which a Tear in an Upholstery Fabric Furniture can be corrected and the methods are given below:

Patch Method

This method of repairing is usually used to repair large or wide holes in the upholstery. The steps of patching a tear in an Upholstery Fabric Furniture are given below;
  • First a user needs to cut a heavy-duty fabric piece in a square shape which should be slightly larger in size than the tear in the Upholstery..
  • Then he needs to lift the torn upholstery up and then place the patch below it and in order to smooth out the patch, he can use the handle of a spoon so that the patch lays flat.
  • Then he needs to hold back the thin side part of the upholstery and pin it down with poultry skewer or an upholstery pin.
  • Then he needs to brush the patch with a latex fabric glue along with the edges of the torn upholstery.
  • After that, he needs to remove the pin and flap down the upholstery over the patch by gently pressing it. He can also pat it slightly in order to smooth the fabric.
  • At last he needs to insert more to the torn edges of the upholstery with the patch so that it will hold the fabric at a place while the glue dries up and as soon as the glue dries, he can remove all the pins and use the upholstery afterward.

Sewing Method

Steps to repair a tear in the upholstery using the sewing method are given below:
  • First the user needs to check the frays of a tear and apply a coat of liquid seam sealant on them. By letting the sealant dry will prevent the frays from worsening.
  • Then the user needs to fold down the edges of the tear and makes sure the frayed parts are folded underneath because sewing near frays will cause more damage in future.
  • Then he needs to use nylon thread with mattress or upholstery needle in order to thread the tear because nylon thread is considered stronger than other regular threads.
  • Then he needs to pinch both the edges of the fabric together by sliding the needle from the right-hand side of the tear.
  • In the stitching, a user needs to pull the thread all the way through in and out in order to make close stitches. He needs to continue stitching till he reaches the end and if he sees the fabric looks puckered at the end, he can pinch the edges together with few more stitches.
  • The stitching should continue till the old and new seam meets. Then, he needs to pull the stitch through upholstery in order to create a loop through which he has to pull the needle twice and then thread it tightly in order to knot it.
  • At last, the user needs to tread backward few small stitches over the seam and then cut it down so that it wouldn't loose.
