12 Easy Steps To Repair/Fix Cane Chair

Cane Chair looks great in our homes and gardens if you maintain them and take good care of them every now and then but sometimes due to some reason they can easily be loose or damaged after a short period of time, if you want to repair your cane furniture then you need to follow the given steps carefully to get the best result of your hard work. Here are the 12 steps to finish this task:
  1. New Sheet: This is the first step you need to take for this project, Simply precut the new cane of sheet extend it about 1 inch beyond from the routine on all 4 sides of the cane chair.
  2. Soak: Now, soak the new cane sheets in warm water for at least 1 hour. Soaking will helps to make the caning material easy & pliant to work with.
  3. Cut: Once your soaking process is done now cut approximately both bounds of the old strip on the cane chair with the help of utility knife. You need to rupture the bond of your old glue after doing this now, you can easily lift the spline from the cane chair.
  4. Screwdriver: Simply take a screwdriver to lift the boundary of your old spline from the cane chair.
  5. Pull Out: Pull out the caning and old spline keep them aside.
  6. Place: Now, place the modulated sheet of your cane on top of the cane chair. Convergence the groove by about 1 inch on all sides of it.
  7. Pattern: Keeping the structure square on all the edges of the sheet, expanse the caning lenderly and hammer a caning wedge into the groove on each side of your cane chair. After putting the new sheet down, make sure the woven structure runs consecutively across and up and down the seat of your cane chair, not oblique. Recheck the structure as you push the first 4 caning wedges into the groove.
  8. Hammer: Again hammer a few more wedge shape into each side and push your cane into the groove. Make sure to maintain the expanse and structure so that it does not slip off a square or loosen.
  9. Soak Again: After following all the previous steps carefully now, soak the spline again in water(warm) for 15 minutes. Keeping your splining soft makes your work too much easier.
  10. Squeeze: Now, take out the wedges 1 at a time as you squeeze carpenter’s glue in the grooves of cane chair and press in the soft spline, use one of the wedges and a hammer to tap your spline into the correct place.
  11. Trim: Use a utility knife to trim off the excess cane and then sand the cane seat by using a fine-grit sandpaper.
  12. Spray: This is your last step, simply spray the cane chair with lacquer. Let it sit for a few days before using your cane chair.
