How To Repair A Rug With Holes In It: Easy Steps Of Repairing Holes In A Rug

Easy Steps Of Repairing Holes In A Rug

Area rugs are regarded as one of the exceptional rug pieces that make nice accents to a room, serving as a decorative embellishment & setting off a coffee table or entry point. However, it is always possible that your rug will bunch up when you walk on it, regardless of the rug being a large Oriental rug or a small, round area rug. This is due to the reason that the bottom of the rug is smooth and glides over the carpet underneath. Another problem that can occur in a rug is a hole, which you need to repair as soon as possible after noticing it. Collect the certain materials & tools needed for the process & then go through the below-mentioned easy steps in order to repair holes in a rug:

Materials & Tools Needed

  • Carpet Remnant That Complements The Carpet Around The Hole
  • Utility Knife
  • Empty Can & Scissors
  • Single-Sided Carpet Tape
  • Masking Tape & Marker

Steps

  1. Outline The Damaged Area: Firstly, move the empty can onto the rug, focusing on the middle of the hole, which will help leave an indented circle on top of your rug that all the way contains the damaged section.
  2. Cut Out The Damaged Section: With the help of a utility knife, trim off the damaged piece of the rug, going along with the outline that you made in step one. Trim smoothly through the base of the rug, however, you need to be extra careful not to trim into the carpet padding underneath. After you are done cutting out your circle, use your hands or a vacuum in order to get rid of any stray carpet fibers.
  3. Find Carpet Remnant: Now your piece is cut out, you will need the replacement carpet. Extra carpet will be left over the majority of the time after you have finished installing it, and a piece of which you can use for the repair. If there is no extra carpet leftover, then there may be small portions of carpet that are not clearly visible, including the carpeting in the back of a closet.
  4. Trim Repair Piece: Take the same empty can that you used in step 1 and mark an outline in the remnant. The cut-out piece needs to be as close as possible to the size of the new hole that you have made. When you cut it with the help of a utility knife, copy the same movement and produce a circle of the same size as well as shape. After cutting out the repair piece, you need to clean the fringes of loose or damaged carpet fibers.
  5. Mark The Direction Of The Nap: The important factor when it comes to replacing a damaged carpet is to make the two portions match as best you can. The nap of the rug will need to match as well as travel in the same direction, therefore, take into consideration the direction on the new piece. With the help of a masking tape and marker, make an arrow that shows which direction it’s going. Next, do the same thing having the carpet surrounding the damaged area. Make an arrow on the masking tape and both the arrows should be pointing in the same direction.
  6. Add Carpet Tape: Take your single-sided carpet tape and trim adequate lengths in order to fill the gap in the carpet. Each strip should be at least 2-3 inches longer as compared to the width that you are looking to fix due to the reason that you will pull up the carpet on every side of the hole and put some of the tapes underneath it. Strip off the adhesive backing, pull up the carpet on every side of the hole, and move the tape under the carpet. The sticky end will be positioned up, and the tape should go 1-2? past the hole. Repeat this as many times as needed in order to cover the entire area of the hole. When you are done, the “hole” should now be covered with tape sticky side up ready to “grab” the new carpet cutout.
  7. Patch The Carpet Hole: The arrows displaying the direction of the nap should still be positioned in the same direction. Smoothly insert the new carpet piece into the hole as long as it is attached to the carpet tape and level having the carpet surrounding it. As soon as it is in place, press gently on the edges for at least 5 minutes and shift the carpet fibers in order to hide any gaps betwixt the new piece and the old. If you want, you can place a heavy piece of furniture over the new piece for the whole night to press it down even more.
  8. Trim Uneven Fibers: Irrespective of the fact that how well you lay it down, there will, in all likelihood, be longer pieces that don’t fit right betwixt the new section and the old. You can even cut them out by gently running scissors over the top of the carpet fibers and removing any lengths that are too long. Make sure not to trim it too short.
