How To Remove Wall Mounted Handrail: Easy Process To Remove Wall & Spindle-Mounted Handrail

Easy Process To Remove Wall-mounted & Spindle-mounted Handrails

If you are planning to replace the handrail on your staircase, then the first thing you have to do is remove the old handrail by simply trimming through at either end, close by to the newel posts, with the help of a fine-toothed hand saw. It is highly suggested to have someone for assistance in order to steady the rail as you trim through and to support the cut end. If you place a removed spindle at each end, for a limited period of time, then it may offer extra support as you cut. There are mainly two types of handrails that are mostly used to beautify a home: wall-mounted and spindle-mounted handrails. Metal brackets take hold of the wall-mounted type to the wall with the help of screw fasteners. Spindle-mounted handrails are a little more complex & confusing. The rail itself secures to the newel posts at each end of the staircase before a number of upright spindles secure to the underside of the rail through its length. Flat pieces of filler wood will help lock these spindles into a ridged & cut channel on the bottom of the rail.

Wall-mounted Handrail

  • First of all, unfasten, untie, or loosen the screws that link the stair rail to the wall-mounted brackets. You can easily unfasten the screws with the help of a screwdriver.
  • Now, remove or take out the stair rail off the brackets. If in case you have used glue, at the time of installing a wall-mounted handrail, in order to help take hold of the rail in place, then you may have to remove it more forcefully.
  • Finally, support and move the rail down or up the stairs to the desired storage location.

Spindle And Newel Post-mounted Handrail

  • Firstly, remove or take out the top, flat filler piece that is in betwixt the first spindle and newel post. Take it out with the help of a pry bar and claw hammer. This piece may be fastened or joined in with glue and therefore, you will have to strike it fairly hard. Don't worry if you break it, due to the reason, that new pieces are inexpensive.
  • Now, move each subsequent spindle upward smoothly as long as the wood filler pieces fall out of the fundamental or primary groove of the stair rail. Each of these may be fastened or fixed in place with glue and so prying may be required. Keep removing the spindles as long as you get to the bottom newel post.
  • After that, track down the screws that take hold of the stair rail to the newel posts. You will generally notice a small wood plug, which protects the screw head. The screw head will be on the opposite side of the rail. Pop the plugs out with the help of a flathead screwdriver.
  • Finally, unfasten or loosen the screws with the help of a Phillips or flathead screwdriver. The rail should now be unfastened from the newel posts. Take out the rail off the spindles before removing it from the staircase.
