How To Remove Veneer From Cabinets: Ways To Remove

Ways to Remove Veneer from Cabinets

Wood Veneer is a thin layer of real wood that has been attached on to the cabinet face or various other furniture types with glue. There can be two types of veneer i.e. Old & New and in order to remove both types of veneer from the cabinets, the user needs to follow the below-given ways:

Remove Old Veneer

The steps to remove old veneer from the cabinets are as follows:
  1. Remove Doors & Hardware:
The first step will be to remove doors & hardware from the cabinets such as hinges, handles, etc. with a screwdriver or any other suitable tool. The doors should be set at a place where they can be easily accessed.
  2. Use Heat Gun Or Steam Iron:
After that, the user needs to aim heat gun towards any corner edge of the cabinets and move it back & forth. The step will heat the old glue and make it easier to remove veneer from the cabinets. Alternatively, the user needs to pour some water into the steam iron and set its setting to the hottest. After that, the user needs to move the iron along the edges of the cabinets. The step will heat the glue and make it easier to remove veneer from the cabinets.
  3. Use Putty Knife:
Once the glue heats, the user needs to insert a putty knife in between the wood base and veneer. After that, the user needs to twist the knife a little and try to pull its handle up in order to remove some part of the wood veneer from the cabinets. The step will also help the user to release some of the softened glue.
  4. Repeat The Steps As Required:
The user needs to repeat the heating and prying up steps until all the veneer is removed from the cabinets. Once the entire veneer is off, the user needs to scrape the remaining glue from the cabinets.

Remove New Veneer

The steps to remove new veneer from the cabinets are as follows:
  1. Remove Door & Hardware:
The first step will be to remove doors and hardware from the cabinets with a screwdriver or any other similar tool. It is necessary for the user to remove hinges & handles during the process as well.
  2. Use Putty Knife:
After that, the user needs to insert a putty knife in between the wood base and veneer from any of the corner edges. In case, the veneer is peeling, the user needs to insert the putty knife from the peel opening. It has been recommended to push the knife as deep as possible and then pull its handle up to remove some part of the veneer.
  3. Use Chisel With Hammer:
In case, the putty knife is unable to remove the veneer, the user can switch to a thin chisel and hammer it a little in order to loosen the glue and remove veneer from the cabinets.
  4. Use Vinegar Solution:
In order to remove veneer with a vinegar solution, the user needs to wipe the entire veneer surface with a sponge dampened in a solution containing water and white vinegar in equal parts. Let the solution soak on to the veneer surface and then try to remove it with a putty knife.
  5. Scrape Off The Remaining Glue:
The last step will be to scrape off the remaining glue from the cabinets.
