How To Remove Stem From Caster Wheels: Easy Steps For Removing Stem

Easy Steps For Removing Stem From Caster Wheels

A stem caster is actually a part of a swivel wheel system that is attached to the legs of furniture or even in shelving as well. Most of the time the stem on the older furniture will break off from the wheel or will become loose, resulting in malfunction of the swivel wheel. If this is the case, that time the caster needs to be replaced but in order to install the new wheels its important to remove the stem from caster wheels. The steps for removing the stem as well as installing the new caster wheels are mentioned below:
  1. Turn: The first step is to flip the furniture over so its easy to inspect each wheel. Check which one needs to be replaced but it's a good idea to replace all 4 casters so the furniture like chair will roll properly.
  2. Slip: Now in this step the user needs to slide the old wheels out of the caster and discard it. If in case the wheels are threaded, that time unscrew and then remove the wheels. With the help of a screwdriver pry old caster out of the leg. Hold down the end with the help of pliers and pull out the caster.
  3. Check: Now check out the hole in chair or shelf leg to see if there is any debris that has been left behind by the old caster. If there is any, you need to clean it as it is important for the new caster that it fits properly.
  4. Insert: Now its time to install the new caster into the old hole. If the user can't find an exact fit, that time drill the hole bigger or simply insert a dowel rod to the size of the new caster. To hammer down the dowel into place before drilling the new hole use a rubber mallet for tapping.
  5. Attach: Secure the new wheels to the stem casters simply by inserting them into the hole or threading them, depending on the design.

Tip

It's advisable to avoid the forcefully trample on the chair base when trying to replace the caster as it can break the base. If the caster stem is stuck in the chair base while trying to replace the caster, the user must try to separate it with a flat screwdriver.
