How To Remove Scratches From Bathroom Sink: Steps And Items Needed

Steps And Items Needed To Remove Scratches From Bathroom Sink

The acrylic is a durable and strong material that is often used as a different to glass in windows and other products because it doesn't shatter. Acrylic sinks are also strong & durable, but they are also vulnerable to scratches and small chips which is caused by sharp utensils and other types of hard objects. Any type of scratches in your acrylic sink does not mean that you have to replace your sink or wholly refinish it. Most of the scratches can be easily repaired by sanding and applying a polishing compound. If you want to remove scratches from your bathroom sink then you just need to collect the required items and follow the steps. Here is the list of required items and steps for this process:

Things Needed For This Process

  • 2,000-Grit Wet/Dry Sandpaper
  • 1,500-Grit Wet/Dry Sandpaper
  • 1,000-Grit Wet/Dry Sandpaper
  • Scissors, Water & Towel
  • Polishing Compounds
  • Soft, Lint-Free Cloth

Steps For This Process

  • First of all, you need to cut a piece of 2,000-grit wet/dry sandpaper into a 2-inch square and then you need to place this into your container of cold water and let it soak for near about 5 minutes.
  • The next step is to clean your sink with the help of a damp cloth in order to remove any dirt and debris and dry with the help of a clean towel.
  • Now you need to sand the scratched area of your sink with your soaked sandpaper. Simply move your sandpaper in a circular motion around the scratch affected area by just applying light pressure on it. Keep your soaked sandpaper wet the entire time while you work.
  • You need to avert sanding in one area for too long to avert softening the acrylic with the heat caused by the friction while rubbing.
  • Next, continue sanding until the scratch fades significantly from your sink and only left with a slight haze on the acrylic.
  • Now you need to soak a piece of 1,500-grit wet/dry sandpaper in cold water for near about 5 minutes if the scratch is not removed by using 2,000-grit. You just need to sand the scratch affected area again by simply using a circular motion and gentle pressure.
  • You also need to pause about every 30 seconds to dry your affected area and also check your progress. Keep your sandpaper wet as you work.
  • Be careful, you need to stop sanding when the scratch is barely discernible and dry your sink area thoroughly with your clean towel.
  • Finish your work by simply sanding once more with a 2-inch square of wet 2,000-grit sandpaper until your sink surface of the area is smooth. Dry your sink area wholly with the help of a clean towel.
  • You also need to apply a thin layer of the medium-coarse polishing compound to the affected area by using a soft, lint-free cloth. Just make sure that the compound is intended for use with the acrylic type of finishes.
  • Next you need to buff your compound into the sanded acrylic in small circles to remove haze & any scratches. Never buff a single area too long.
  • Finally, you need to apply a fine polishing compound to a new cloth and then you need to apply to the acrylic to fill in any leftover scratches. Simply buff in a circular motion until your sink surface is smooth and leave it to dry for few hours before use.

Tips For This Process

  • The polishing compound is also famous as rubbing compound and is easily available at most automotive and paint supply stores.
  • Water also serves as a lubricant that averts the buildup of residues on the paper, which can easily reduce its effectiveness.
  • The 2,000-grit sandpaper is the finest type of grit sandpaper available and should remove most surface scratches in your acrylic sinks.
  • Slenderly deeper scratches will always require 1,500-grit, which is a coarser paper. Any deep scratches will require the use of a coarser 1,000-grit paper, but never use a lower grit than that, or it will add more scratches to your acrylic instead of removing them.
