Steps To Remove Oil Based Paint From Wood Trim
In order to remove paint from wood trim, it is necessary for the user to be sure about the paint he is removing because the steps to remove oil-based paint are completely different compared to the latex paint. The latex paint can be removed from wood trim by rubbing it with a rag dampened with denatured alcohol. Whereas, the oil-based paint can be removed from the wood trim by following the below-given steps:
- Sand The Paint Lightly:
The first step will be to sand the oil paint lightly by using fine grit sandpaper. The user needs to make sure that he doesn't dig in the wood trim due to over sanding. It has been recommended to stop sanding immediately once most of the paint is sanded off from the trim, even if some paint is remaining. - Wipe Down The Remaining Paint:
After that, the user needs to wipe down the remaining paint from the trim by using a rag dampened with mineral spirits. It has been recommended not to over wet the wood because mineral spirits can soak in and can damage the wood. - Wipe Clean & Dry:
All the areas of wood trim that are touched with mineral spirits need to be wiped again with a clean cloth dampened with water. After that, the user needs to dry the trim with a soft dry cloth. - Match the Discolored Trim:
In case, the wooden trim gets discolored due to the process, the user needs to match it by applying a matching stain over it or by using wood finish repair pen.
